THE KOREAN CHURCH MISSIONS TO THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA (01)

THE KOREAN CHURCH MISSIONS TO THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA

Kenya, as John Gunther said, formerly known as British East Africa,
directly to the east of Uganda and like it spanning the equator, in
the first half of the twentieth century was included in the British
Empire. The total population of almost 12,000,000 in 1970 is composed
of most Africans and other groups-including Asians, Europeans, and
Arabs - amount to only 2 percent of country's total inhabitants.

1. THE RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND OF MISSION TO KENYA

The religion of most Africans is the cult of animism, and Arab's Is-
lam and Hinduism. Christian faith first came to Kenya in 1498.

The name Kenya was later known through Protestants in the 1840's
since the contacts through Nestorians, Syrian Orthodox, and Roman
Catholics. In 1884, the CMA has begun to work in Mombasa in 1884. The
numerical advance in Christian membership in Kenya has been very
rapid since 1900's. In that year, Christians were only 0.2 7o of the
Population; by 1985 the percentage stood at 73.

In fact. Early Catholic missions penetrated Kenya in the Fifteenth
century, but results of this work disappeared. And then a new wave of
Catholic missions began in 1889.

Protestant mission work has been carried on by the large variety of
missions, particularly after 1902, when rail service to the country
began. In that year, American Friends came into Kenya. The Church of
God has sent her missionaries to Kenya since 1919. The African Inland
Church is the largest Protestant Church in the land.

There is a large Presbyterian Church among the Kikuyu and a Methodist Church among the
Meru. The Southern Baptist Church penetrated Kenya in 1956. And then
the Salvation Army and the Canadian Pentacostal Congregation sent her
missionaries to Kenya of which they had 30,000 members of the Christ-
ian in Kenya. It is significant that the Methodist missionaries have
been sent by the Methodist Mission Association in Meru around Mombasa
from the Eastern Africa.
