THE KOREAN CHURCH PLANTING IN THE REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL

THE KOREAN CHURCH PLANTING IN THE REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL

1. HISTORICAL SETTING OF BRAZIL FOR THE CHURCH PLANTING

Brazil(Brasil) is a federal republic occupaying nearly half the
continent of South America. It has become the Republic of Brazil in
1889. Its population in 1972 numbered about 99,000,000. But it is by
far the most populous country in Latin America with a population of
126,000,000. In addition, it is wonder that the population is consi-
dered to be 94 Christian, with the Catholic membership out numberi-
ng Protestants by nearly nine to one. But recently Evangelistic
churches, especially Pentacostal churches have been rapidly growing.
Therefore the proportion of the Christians to the population has
been going down less than 90. On the other hand the Protestant chu-
rches have been rapidly growing at present. It is considered to be
about 97o of the total population.

Catholic mission work in Brazil began with the coming of the Port-
uguese in 1500. But Protestan mission work began after a liberal-mi-
nded Portuguese empero allowed evangelical missions to operate after
1840. The first continuous mission work began with coming of Dr. R.
Calley from England 1855. Of course the earliest missionary had been
sent to Rio de Janeiro by the Methodist Church in the United States
of America in 1836. But its mission work had been given up in 1842.
Among the mainline denominations, the Presbyterians have enjoyed
than average growth. It now numbers 624,000 in Brazil.

The Brazilian Baptist Convention arisen mainly out of United Stat-
es mission activities has one million members, and maintains thirty
Bible schools and seminaries and a large publishing house. It sends
Brazilian missionaries to four other countries.

As the Pentecostal lines the Assemblies of God has approximately
four million members. And Of the Protestant denomination, Congregat-
ionalists, Methodists, and Anglicans are also found in sizeable num-
bers in Brazil. Besides there are many mission organization.
