The Modern World (1800 AD-Onwards) (Ecumenical Movement: Hans Kűng)
ÀåºÎ¿µ  2009-01-04 16:56:18, Á¶È¸ : 8,522

(2) Hans Kűng (1928-Now)

1) He was born in 1928 in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. After studying for the priesthood at Rome, he went on to Paris to prepare his doctrinal thesis: Justification: The Doctrine of Karl Barth and a Catholic Reflection, which was published in 1997.

2) He argued that there is no irreconcilable difference between this and the teaching of the Council of Trent.

3) He was appointed as an official theological advisor to the Second Vatican Council. He was active at the council, but was disappointed with some of its results. Most of his major works have led to disapproval at Rome.

4) He forcefully attacks the doctrine of papal infallibility in his book, An Inquiry. He questions its alleged support from the Bible and church tradition.

5) He has been a prolific author and has proved himself a master at writing theology for non-theological tomes, such as On being a Christian (1974), Does God Exist? (1978).

6) The congregation fro the Doctrine of the Faith declared that he can no longer be considered a Catholic theologian nor function as such in a teaching role. But he was not excommunicated and he did not lose his status as a priest due to his influence on the people.

7) His output has continued unabated. He wrote another work on Theology for the Third Millenium (1988), in which he considers the approach to theology in the post-modern age.

8) He would himself prefer to call the ecumenical epoch after the First World War, in the sense of a new global understanding of the various denominations, religions, and regions. His approach to theology includes, therefore, a new departure toward a theology of the world religions, He has recently published his memoirs under the title My Struggle for Freedom (2002).
