Strategies for Cell Group (Recruiting Leaders)

Recruiting Leaders

After this, the pastor must motivate and particpate his key members of the congregation in the training program for church growth movement (Cho 1981, 135). In order to participate them in the program, the pastor must prepare for leadership training plan. And the pastor should involve the key members of the congregation in the leadership training program for the preparation for small group ministry.

How many leaders need to operate the small groups? The number should be determined according to the number of the small groups as Moses did Sometimes spare leaders may be needed to take the place of the leaders who may be absent because of some problems of them (Becker 1993a, 37-38).

What qualities must small group leaders have? Although there are various qualities of the group leaders, the leaders of minstry need to have the qualities listed in the Scriptures.

Palmer Becker summarized essential qualities of Christian leaders according to especially 1 Timothy 3 as: in brief,

(1) hospitable (John 13:35),

(2) respected (1 Tim. 3:1-7),

(3) sensitive (Acts 6:1-7),

(4) motivate (1 Pet. 5:1-7),

(5) grounded (Acts 20:27-32) (Becker 1993a, 40). These are the personality dispositions of the leaders. In fact, there is no mention of seminary dgrees or ordination for the qualification of leaders in the Scriptures, the sportlight is placed squarely on the character of leaders (Richards and Hoeldtke 1980, 117).

Neal F. McBride suggested some indispensable qualifications every group leader should possess:

(1) an understanding of spiritual principles (1 Tim. 5:22),

(2) a growing relationship with Christ (2 Pet. 3:18),

(3) a commitment to caring for people (1 Cor. 12:25),

(4) a desire to serve (Gal. 5:13),

(5) a willingness to learn (Eph. 5:10), and (6) a resolve to spend the necessary time (1 Cor. 14:40) (McBride 1993, 30). These are intellectual, volitional and spiritual dispositions of the leaders.

The writer thinks that the qualifications of the leaders must be the gifts of God necessary to be able to pursue small group ministry, and they should be trained so as to do the work in addition to these.
