1. Principal Tropes Used in Scripture
(성경에 사용된 중요한 비유)
In the present connection we are not concerned with figures of syntax or figures of thought, but rather with those figures of speech that are commonly called tropes, in which a word or expression is used in a different sense from that which properly belongs to it.
(이에 연관하여 구문의 비유나, 사상의 비유에 관심이 있는 것이 아니라, 오히려 한 단어나 표현이 그에 합당한 것으로부터 다른 의미로 사용된 보통 Tropes라고 불리는 말의 비유에 관심이 있는 것이다)
They are founded on resemblance or on certain definite relations. The principal tropes are the metaphor, the metonymy, and the synecdoche.
(그들은 유사성이나 어떤 제한된 관계에 기초하고 있다. 그 주요한 비유들은 은유, 환유, 대유 등이다)
a. The Metaphor (은유, 隱喩/암유, 暗喩) (p. 83)
It might be called an unexpressed comparison.
(은유는 노골적으로 표현하지 않는 비유라고 부를 수 있다)
(1) It is a figure of speech in which one object is likened to another by asserting it to be that other, or by speaking of it as if it were that other.
(이 은유는 이것이 저것이라고 주장한다거나 마치 이것이 저것과 같았었다고 말함으로서 하나의 대상을 다른 것에 유사하다고 하는 말의 비유이다)
(2) It differs from the simile in that it does not express the word of likeness. Metaphors are of frequent occurrence in the Bible.
(이 은유는 유사성의 단어를 표현하지 않는 직유와 다르다. 은유는 성경에 자주 사용되고 있다)
(3) In Ps. 18:2 six of them are found in a single verse. “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower”. (시 18:2) 여호와는 나의 반석이시요 나의 요새시요 나를 건지시는 자시요 나의 하나님이시요 나의 피할 바위시요 나의 방패시요 나의 구원의 뿔이시요 나의 산성이시로다)
1) Jesus employs this figure of speech when He says to the Pharisees: \"Go ye, and tell that fox,\" (Luke 13:32).
2) There are two kinds of metaphors in the Bible that have reference to the Divine Being and deserve special attention:
(하나님에 대한 언급으로 성경에 두 종류의 은유법이 있는데 특별히 유의할 만하다)
(1) anthropopathisms (신인동감동정론) and
(2) anthropomorphisms (신인동형동성론).
① In the former, human emotions, passions and desires are ascribed to God. (Cf. Gen. 6:6-땅 위에 사람 지으셨음을 한탄하사 마음에 근심하시고; Deut. 13:17-너는 이 진멸할 물건을 조금도 네 손에 대지 말라 그리하면 여호와께서 그 진노를 그치시고 너를 긍휼히 여기시고 자비를 더하사 너의 열조에게 맹세하심같이 네 수효를 번성케 하실 것이라; Eph. 4:30-하나님의 성령을 근심하게 하지 말라 그 안에서 너희가 구속의 날까지 인 치심을 받았느니라).
② In the latter, bodily members and physical activities are attributed to Him. (Cf. Ex. 15:16-놀람과 두려움이 그들에게 미치매 주의 팔이 큼을 인하여 그들이 돌같이 고요하였사오되 여호와여 주의 백성이 통과하기까지 곧 주의 사신 백성이 통과하기까지였나이다;
Ps. 34:16-여호와의 얼굴은 행악하는 자를 대하사 저희의 자취를 땅에서 끊으려 하시는도다;
Lam. 3:56-주께서 이미 나의 음성을 들으셨사오니 이제 나의 탄식과 부르짖음에 주의 귀를 가리우지 마옵소서;
Zech. 14:4-그 날에 그의 발이 예루살렘 앞 곧 동편 감람 산에 서실 것이요 감람 산은 그 한가운데가 동서로 갈라져 매우 큰 골짜기가 되어서 산 절반은 북으로, 절반은 남으로 옮기고;
Jas. 5:4-보라 너희 밭에 추수한 품꾼에게 주지 아니한 삯이 소리지르며 추수한 자의 우는 소리가 만군의 주의 귀에 들렸느니라).
3) Undoubtedly there is also a great deal that is metaphorical in the description of heaven as a city with golden streets and pearly gates, in which the tree of life yields its fruits from month to month; and in the representation of the eternal torments as a worm that dieth not, a fire that is not quenched, and a smoke of torment ascending forever and ever.
(분명히 황금 거리와 진주 문들이 있는 하늘의 도성(천국)에 관한 묘사에 있어서 은유적인 표현들이 많은데, 거기에 다달이 열매를 맺는 생명의 나무들이 있다는 것과, 영원한 고통(지옥)의 표현으로 벌레도 죽지 않고 꺼지지 않는 불, 그리고 영원히 솟아오르는 고통의 연기 등이 있다는 것이다).
