Theological Background of the Division of Korean Church (제2강)

I. The Causes of the Church Division
1. The Situation of Mission field
(1) Conservative Mission (to be continued from above)
It is said that Korean Church has been strongly influenced by
conservative theology from the first missionaries has
indulged in the extreme conservatism in Theology and
Faith.
We can guess the theological thought of the missionaries
judging from that Dr. S. A. Moffet the founder of Pyong Yang
Presbyterian Seminary, as a great missionary of Korean
mission said, “I mage up my mind to preach nothing but the
Cross of Gospel of Jesus Christ as Paul did” at the Memorial
Service of his seventieth year of age.
Moreover, Dr. Yul Seo Lee, professor of Systematic Theology
of Pyong Yang Presbyterian Seminary asserted “Any one does
not have to change the letters and passages of the Scriptures
as well as to twist them into some other meanings.”
And also Dr. H. R. Baird, William Martyne the founder of
Soong Sil College gave warning to the students what made
much of English rather than the Bible must be sin. Theses
speak for the conservative standpoint of the Bible.
Yoshikawa Buntalo the Japanese commented on the mission
of Mr. & Mrs. Nitchbeth who had been sent as a missionary of
the Southern Presbyterian Church in the United States of
America to Korea in 1907 was at last sound.
And Dr. A. J. Brown had evaluated the theological thought of
the missionaries by 1911 as a typical conservative theology.
He asserted they were Puritan Stile and the conservatives who
had condemned the higher criticism and liberal theology as
heresies during the first twenty five years.
Furthermore, the ideology of theological education adopted
by the missionaries of the Northen Presbyterian Church in the
United States of America had represented the conservative
cornerstone of the Presbyterian Church in Korea.
Harvie Conn the American missionary concluded that the
theological leadership spirit was thoroughly conservative
whether by motivation or by education, saying to supplement
the commentary of Dr. A. J. Brown in his essay :A Studies in the
Theology of the Korean Presbyterian Church.

한국교회 분열의 신학적 배경 (2)

I. 교회분열의 원인
1. 피선교적 상황
(1) 보수주의적 선교 (앞에서 계속)
이것은 최초 선교사들의 신학적 영향을 강하게 받은 한국교회
가 극단의 보수주의 신학사상에 젖어 있었음을 말해주고 있는
것이다.
장로교 평양신학교의 설립자요 한국선교의 위대한 인물인 마
포삼열 박사는 희년기념예배 석상에서 “사도바울이 결심하였
던 바와 마찬가지로 그리스도의 십자가의 복음이외에 다른 것
은 전하지 않기로 결심하였다.”라고 한 것을 보아서도 선교사
들의 신학사상을 가히 짐작할 수 있을 것이다.
더욱이, 평양신학교 조직신학 교수였던 이율서 박사는 “성경의
문자나 구절들을 고친다든지 그 의미를 왜곡시킨다든지 해서
는 안 된다”고 못 박아 말했다. 또 숭실대학의 창설자 배위량 박
사는 학생들에게 성경보다 영어를 더 소중히 여기는 것은 완전
히 죄라고 경고한 것 등은 보수주의 성경관을 잘 대변해주고
있는 것이다.
일본의 길천문태량(吉川文太량)씨는 적어도 1907년 미국 남장
로교의 선교사로 파송되었던 니쓰벳드 부처의 선교 역시 건전
한 포교라고 논평했으며, 브라운 박사는 적어도 1911년까지의
선교사들의 신학사상을 전형적인 보수신학으로 논평하고 있다.
그는 처음 25년간 전형적 선교사들의 청교도 스타일(Puritan
style)이었으며 고등비평주의와 자유주의 신학을 이단으로 정
죄하는 보수주의자들이었다고 분석했다.
더욱이, 북 장로교 선교사들에 의해 1896년에 채택된 신학교육
의 이념은 더욱 한국장로교회의 보수주의적 기초를 잘 말해주
고 있다.
간하배(Harvie Conn) 선교사는 그의 “한국장로교 신학에 관한
연구”라는 논문에서 브라운(A. J. Brown) 박사의 논평을 보충하
며 말하기를 “동기에 의한 것이건 교육에 의한 것이건 간에 선
교사들의 신학적 지도정신은 강력하게 보수주의적이었다.”라
고 결론을 내렸다. ⛪️⛪️⛪️
