치매 환자와 무슨 말을 하지? (How to Visit With Dementia Patients) – 영어/한글
Is it morally wrong to not visit a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer s in a nursing home? What is the point of visiting if they don t remember you, or won t remember you ever visited?
As a hospice volunteer, most of the folks I see have dementia, most are in a locked memory care part of the facility. I have been warned countless times that the new patient I am about to see is angry, abusive, grabby or likely to hit me. Never, not once, have any of my folks been mean or violent with me. I have found, instead, that these people are craving social contact, and human affection.
I have a unique role in their lives. I am not trying to convince them of anything. I am not there to try to get their cooperation, or force needed care on them. I do not correct their mistakes or their perceptions of reality. I do not come to them with pain because they don’t know who I am.
If one of my folks is talking to somebody who is not in the room, I accept it. If they can’t find the right words, or any words at all…I nod, smile, and tell them I understand. I answer to any name they give me, and reintroduce myself as a new acquaintance everytime we meet. I have listened to stories from folks who have lost their words. I have looked at the same photo albums every visit for weeks. I have made lists of afternoon chores that will never get done. I have sat, holding hands, for hours…just looking out of a sunny window. It’s not about getting well, or holding on to hope, or being recognized. It’s about being present, and sharing your love.
Morals are a personal thing…but I will tell you that a person with dementia does not need to recognize you to feel your affection. If you can give them your love without the burden of your pain, they will receive it.

인간 수명이 길어지면서 치매 환자가 늘어나고 있습니다. 연세 드신 부모님들을 어쩔 수 없이 요양소에 모시는 분들도 늘어나고 있습니다. 저도 장모님을 40여년 모시고 살았는데, 말년에 치매에 결리셔서 요양원에 계시다가 2년 전에 세상을 떠나셨습니다.
치매로 인해 기억력을 상실하고, 가족도 못 알아보는데 꼭 찾아 뵈어야 할까? 찾아 뵌다면 무슨 말을 하고, 무엇을 해드려야 할까?
여기에 옮긴 글은, 중증 치매 환자를 돌보고 있는 요양원 간병인이 쓴 것입니다. 도움이 될 것 같아서 여기에 옮깁니다. 전체를 번역하지 않고 요점만 의역해서 적습니다.
“치매 환자 중에는 화를 잘 내고, 폭력적이 분들이 있습니다. 이분들이 그렇게 행동하는 것은 외롭고 힘들어서 그럽니다. 누가 같이 있어주고, 사랑받는다고 느끼면 그러지 않습니다. 저는 그런 일을 당한 적이 한 번도 없습니다.
저는 치매 환자들에게 무슨 일을 시키거나, 설득하려 하거나, 치료를 강요하지 않습니다. 엉뚱한 생각을 하거나, 무례한 말을 해도 바로잡아주지 않습니다. 제가 해야 할 일이 그것이 아니라고 믿기 때문입니다.
매일 아침 저는 처음 만나는 사람처럼 이름을 말하고, 당신을 돌봐 드리러 왔다고 말합니다. 엉뚱한 이름으로 저를 불러도, 바로 잡지 않고 내 이름인양 응대를 합니다.
방에 있지도 않은 사람과 대화를 나눠도, 방에 그런 사람 없다고 말하지 않고, 잠잠히 듣고만 있습니다. 말도 안되는 주장을 해도 미소를 띄우고, 고개를 끄덕이며, 알았다고 말합니다.
허황된 추억담을 늘어놓아도 고개를 끄덕이면서 들어주고, 같은 가족 사진을 몇 번씩 보여주어도 처음 보는 것처럼 같이 봅니다. 할 말이 없으면 손을 마주 잡고 몇 시간씩 같이 창밖을 내다 보기도 합니다.
치매 환자들을 위로하고 격려할 생각을 버리시기 바랍니다. 이분들에게 필요한 것은, 누군가 같이 있어주고, 관심을 쏟아주는 것입니다. 당신이 누구인지 못 알아봐도 섭섭해 하지 마시기 바랍니다. 상대방이 누구이든, 같이 있어주고 관심을 쏟아주는 사람이 있으면 이분들은 행복해 합니다.”
