박해 받으면서도 모르는 크리스천들 (Persecution in 21st Century)- 영어/한글
Persecution seems inevitable for followers of Jesus. Jesus Himself predicted it, and the Apostles warned about it. The whole book of Revelation was written to comfort and encourage Christians who were under persecution.
In democratic countries like the US or South Korea, there seems to be no persecution, but there is. Christians are just not aware of it because they associate persecution with heroic suffering like being beaten, thrown in jail, or cast in a lions’ den to defend their faith..
First century Christians did experience such persecution, but their persecution were mostly economical. They were cut off from business deals, thrown out of trade unions, and socially ostracized.
Today’s persecution is more cultural. If you point out the weakness of Evolution Theory, you are considered uneducated. If you raise your voice against same sex marriage, you are condemned as an oppressor of minority groups. If you say that abortion should not be performed just out of inconvenience to a pregnant woman, you will be criticized for suppressing women’s rights.
Sometimes it’s harder to be ridiculed than to be physically beaten. So many Christians abandon their faith to avoid criticism and shame, not realizing they are actually succumbing to persecution.
Just like the 1st century Christians, Christians who live in the 21st century need to take heed of Apostle Peter’s admonition: “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

진정한 예수님의 제자라면 세상으로부터 박해 받는 것은 피할 수 없을 것 같습니다. 예수님도 예고하셨고, 사도 바울도 경고했습니다. 요한 계시록은 책 전체가 박해 받는 교인들을 격려하고 소망을 심어 주기 위하여 기록되었습니다.
오늘날 한국이나 미국을 비롯한 민주주의 국가에는 박해가 없다고 생각하는 사람들이 있습니다. 이런 착각은, 매를 맞고, 감옥에 투옥되고, 사자 굴에 던져지는, 극적인 것만을 박해라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 그러나 오늘날도 박해가 있습니다. 이를 의식하지 못할 뿐입니다. 그래서 박해 앞에서 무너집니다.
1세기 교인들이 받았던 극적인 박해는 사실 간헐적이었습니다. 일상적인 경제적 박해가 더 컸습니다. 오늘 날의 상황으로 말하자면 예수를 믿었기 때문에 사업 거래처가 끊기고, 조합에서 쫓겨나고, 사회 생활에서 왕따를 당하는 것 등이었습니다.
오늘날의 박해는 주로 문화적입니다. 진화론의 허점을 지적하면, 무지한 사람으로 비웃음 받습니다. 동성간의 결합을 결혼이라 할 수 없다고 하면, 성소수자를 억압한다고 비난 받습니다. 산모의 편리만을 위한 낙태는 안 된다고 말하면, 여성의 권리를 탄압한다고 매도 당합니다.
신체적인 고통보다, 비난 받고, 비웃음 당하고, 왕따 당하는 것이 더 고통스러울 수 있습니다. 그래서 많은 크리스천들이 박해 앞에서 복음을 등지고, 믿음을 저버립니다. 그러면서도 자신은 박해 때문에 믿음을 버렸다고 생각하지 않습니다.
베드로의 경고는 1세기나 21세기나 유효합니다. “정신을 차리고, 깨어 있으십시오. 여러분의 원수 악마가, 우는 사자 같이 삼킬 자를 찾아 두루 다닙니다[베드로전서 5:8].”
