성령의 열매는 덕목이 아닙니다 (Not Virtues but Fruit of the Spirit)-영어/한글
“Be like Jesus” is a phrase we often hear after accepting Christ. But it is hard to be like Jesus if we don’t have a clear picture of Him and His character.
Apostle Paul tells the Galatian Christians that he is working hard so that Christ would be formed in them (Gal 4:19). Then he lists the fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5:22-23. I think he was indicating that exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, is the result of Christ being formed in them. Therefore the qualities listed in these verses should not be considered the virtues pursued by Greek philosophers, but rather a description of Jesus’ personality.
If so, each of the Spirit’s fruit should be understood in the context of personal relationship.
Peace, one of the fruit of the Spirit, is commonly understood as a supernatural peace that Christians sometimes experience in the midst of suffering. But I believe it should be understood as peace with people. Maintaining good relationships with difficult people without resentment is humanly impossible. It’s possible only with the help from the Holy Spirit, thus His fruit.
Another example is joy, another fruit of the Holy Spirit. It is also usually understood as the feeling of happiness in the midst of hardship, but I think it’s more accurate to explain it as genuine happiness when something good happens to other people. It’s rather easy to commiserate when something bad happens to someone, but it’s nearly impossible to feel joyful without envy when someone gets blessings we don’t have. Only the Holy Spirit can make that happen.
When we display the characteristics described as the fruit of the Holy Spirit, we are being like Jesus!

크리스천이라면 누구나 예수님을 닮고 싶은 욕구가 있을 것입니다. 그러나 예수님을 닮았을 때 모습을 머리에 그릴 수 없으면, 사격 훈련장에서 과녁이 어디 있는지 모르면서 명중을 꿈꾸는 사람처럼 됩니다.
사도 바울은 갈라디아서 4:19에서 “나는 여러분 속에 그리스도의 형상이 이루어지기까지 다시 해산의 고통을 겪습니다.”라고 말합니다. 그리고 다음 장에서는 이렇게 적고 있습니다. “성령의 열매는 사랑과 기쁨과 화평과 인내와 친절과 선함과 신실과 온유와 절제입니다 [갈 5:22~23].
이러한 열매들은 헬라 철학자들이 추구하는 덕목이 아닙니다. 예수님의 성품입니다. 그리스도의 형상이 이루어졌을 때 나타나는 성품들을 사도 바울이 열거하고 있는 것입니다.
예수님의 성품은 인간의 수양으로서 이룰 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 성령님이 우리 안에서 일하실 때 얻어지는 결과입니다. 그래서 성령의 열매입니다.
성령의 열매가 예수님의 성품을 묘사한 것이라면, 이것들은 관계 속에서 이해되어야 합니다.
예를 들어 ‘평화(혹은 화평)’는 내적인 평화보다, 남과 누리는 평화라고 이해해야합니다. 성격이 안 맞고, 같이 하기 힘든 사람들을 사랑하며 더불어 사는 것이 평화입니다. 이것은 인간의 의지력으로 될 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 성령님께서 일하신 결과로 얻어지는 것입니다. 그래서 성령의 열매입니다.
‘기쁨’도 내적으로 맛보는 기쁨도 포함될 수 있겠지만, 남과 누리는 기쁨입니다. 남이 아파할 때 같이 아파하는 것은 어느 정도 가능하지만, 자신이 못 누리는 축복을 남이 받았을 때 진정으로 기뻐해주는 것은 어렵습니다. 성령님께서만이 가능케 하십니다. 그래서 성령의 열매입니다.
이러한 성령의 열매가 우리의 삶 가운데 나타날 때, 우리는 예수님을 닮아간다고 말합니다.
