하나님이 나만 사랑하시는 것 같아요. (God Loves Me Like His Only Child)-영어/한어
Many years ago I visited a church member who was in advanced stages of stomach cancer. She was at death’s door – skin and bones, breathing heavily with great effort, and hardly able to speak. She said something during our visit that shocked me. She said, “God seems to love me like I’m His only child.”
Her words stuck with me for a long time, but nowadays I sometimes find myself thinking the same thing. God seems to love me like I’m His only child.
There are obvious reasons for the feeling. God has been good to me. He called me to lead a movement to restore the New Testament church and made it fruitful. He enabled me to do so by turning all my weaknesses into strengths. He never allowed any hardships in my life that I couldn’t handle, probably because He knows how fragile I am. He has answered practically all my prayers, big and small.
But the feeling that God loves me like His only child comes from past adversities, failures, and sufferings. Looking back, I realize all those things were blessings from God, who is infinitely wise and loving and knows what’s best for me. He has exhibited love that only seems possible for someone with a single child.
I hope that if I must die in extreme pain I will still be able to say the same thing the aforementioned sister did - God seems to love me like I’m His only child.

휴스턴서울교회를 담임할 때, 위장암 말기로 죽음을 앞두고 있는 50대 자매님을 방문했습니다. 얼굴은 해골 같았고, 숨은 가쁘게 쉬고, 말은 제대로 못했습니다. 그런데 이분이 혼신의 힘을 내어 내게 한 말이 충격이었습니다. “목사님, 하나님이 세상에서 나만 사랑하시는 것 같아요.”
그런데 저도 요즈음 이런 느낌을 종종 받습니다.
그동안 하나님의 사랑을 많이 받았습니다. 제 그릇에 넘치는 큰 사역을 맡기시고, 감당케 하셨습니다. 제 약점을 강점으로 바꾸어 사용하셨습니다. 제가 깨어지기 쉬운 것을 아셔서 그런지, 견디지 못할 시험을 겪지 않게 하셨습니다. 사소한 기도도 들어주시고, 생각만 해도 원하는 것을 주시기도 하셨습니다.
그러나 나만 사랑하신다는 느낌은, 지난날 겪었던 역경, 고난, 좌절을 돌아보면서 생겨났습니다. 시련이라고 생각했던 모든 것들이 지금 보니 하나님의 사랑이었고, 내게만 관심 있는 분만이 보일 수 있는 지혜와 세심함과 배려였습니다.
제가 세상을 떠날 때 극심한 고통 가운데 있더라도, 그 자매님과 똑같이, “하나님이 세상에서 나만 사랑하시는 것 같아요.” 고백할 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.
