Many Koreans seem to live in the past, not in the present.
Some seem to live in the 1940s when Korea was under the Japanese occupation. They seem to feel threatened by Japan and still afraid Korea will be taken over if any diplomatic concessions or compromises are made. Yet US News & World Report ranked Japan the 8th best country in the world and Korea the 6th in their 2022 survey.
Some seem to live in the 1960s when Korea was so poor that the accumulation of wealth was the only goal for the nation and its people. They still value accumulation of wealth above anything else though Korea is now a wealthy and economically developed country, and fair distribution of wealth is a more important issue.
Some seem to live in the 1980s when students demonstrated against dictatorial governments. They prefer street rallies over negotiations and confrontation over cooperation despite the fact that Korea is now an exemplary democratic country with guaranteed freedom of speech and free elections.
Some pastors seem to live in the 1980s when churches were growing by leaps and bounds to the amazement of Christians all over the world. They still seem to believe they are doing successful ministry if their membership is large and their church building is big, even when church membership is falling rapidly across denominations and young people are leaving church en masse.
I hope people stop living in the past and instead live in the present with their gaze fixed on the future.
