존속 자체가 목적은 아니쟎아요? (Survival Itself Can’t Be the Goal)-영어/한글
For some Christian organizations, simply existing is their goal. Their leaders strive to continue these groups, even when their organizations are no longer fulfilling their missions.
When I started House Church Ministries International (HCMI) about 25 years ago, I wanted it to be an organization that could one day be dissolved without issue if it is no longer accomplishing its mission effectively.
To ensure this goal, two measures were taken.
First, a clause was put in the HCMI constitution that prohibits collecting members’ fees and having its own budget. When an organization has money, dissolution is difficult because people who benefit financially from it resist.
So far, we are doing fine without a budget since HCMI programs are run by volunteers, and only registration fees are collected.
Second, I made sure that buildings were neither purchased nor built for HCMI ministries. I have seen many organization leaders sue each other for ownership instead of focusing on accomplishing their missions. Thus, when a philanthropist offered to build a building for HCMI after I retired from Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, I refused.
We have been doing fine without a building or even an office.
I hope that HCMI will never seek to continue on if it loses its effectiveness for restoring Biblical churches and that its leaders will be willing to dissolve. And I hope other leaders of Christian organizations do the same.

많은 교회와 기독교 단체가 하나님의 필요를 더 이상 못 채움에도 불구하고, 존속 자체가 목표가 되어 몸부림치는 것을 봅니다.
약 25년 전 국제 가정교회 사역원(가사원)을 창설하였을 때, 가사원은 이래서는 안 된다고 생각했습니다. 예수님이 꿈꾸시는 교회를 회복하는 것이 목적이라면, 이 목적을 위해 쓰임 받다가 유용성이 사라졌을 때에는 즉시 해체할 수 있어야 한다고 생각했습니다.
이렇게 되도록 두 가지 조처를 하였습니다.
첫째, 모든 사역은 자비량으로 한다고 가사원 헌법에 못 박았습니다. 예산이 있으면, 가사원을 해체시키고자 할 때 금전적인 혜택을 누리는 사람들이 반대할 수 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 가정교회 세미나와 컨퍼런스를 비롯한 모든 가사원 프로그램은 예산 없이, 자원봉사에 의하여, 등록금으로 운영되고 있습니다.
둘째, 사무실과 건물을 소유하지 않기로 하였습니다. 아니면 가사원을 해체하려 할 때에 이권이 걸린 사람들이 저항하고, 소송까지도 갈 수 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 제가 휴스턴 서울교회에서 은퇴한 후 국제 가사원 건물을 지어 주겠다는 독지가가 있었지만 거절하였습니다.
국제가사원은 성경적인 교회 회복을 위해 쓰임 받다가, 주님께서 더 이상 필요 없다 하시면 손 탁탁 털고 해체시킬 수 있는 단체가 되면 좋겠습니다.
국제가사원뿐만이 아니라, 모든 기독교 단체들이 예수님의 필요를 채우고 있는지 진지하게 성찰하고, 아니라고 판단되면 단체를 해체시키던지, 예수님의 필요를 채울 수 있도록 환골탈태하는 과감한 결단이 있으면 좋겠습니다.
