자신을 못 보는 목사들 (Know Thyself)-영어/한글
As a retired pastor, I have the privilege of mentoring many pastors. It’s rewarding but can sometimes get frustrating when they show little improvement.
I think a lack of self-awareness is often what keeps people from improvement. They are unable to see themselves objectively. When I suggest ways to improve on their weaknesses, they rarely follow through because they are incapable of recognizing their problems.
I think this lack of self-awareness is the cause of many conflicts between pastors and lay leaders. Lay leaders see the discrepancy between their pastors’ teaching and their actions, but the pastors themselves don’t see that. This makes leaders lose respect for their pastors and close their ears to the pastors’ teaching. And then conflict ensues.
Leaders need to be aware of themselves. They need to know their strengths and weaknesses, and they also need to be aware of how they are perceived by others. The first step in achieving that goal is to pay close attention to what people say, especially lay leaders.
However, I’ve observed that people’s self-awareness is limited. They can address and improve their shortcomings to an extent, but when their limit is reached, they cannot overcome these flaws or even acknowledge that they exist. When that point is reached, it’s best for lay leaders to accept their pastors as they are, doing their best to encourage and support them.
You can be assured that churches will continue to save people and restore broken lives despite their pastors’ limitations because it is the body of Christ and He is the head of the church.

나이가 드니까 목회자들을 코칭하거나 멘토링 할 기회가 많이 주어집니다. 그런데 목회자들의 삶이나 목회가 어느 정도의 변화를 보인 후에 더 이상 변화가 없으면 맥이 빠집니다. 나는 열심히 가르치고, 이들은 열심히 배우는 것 같은데, 왜 더 이상 변화하지 않을까?
이유는, 목회자들이 자신을 객관적으로 보는데 한계가 있기 때문이지 싶습니다. 자기 인식의 한계입니다. 자신을 정확히 못 보기 때문에 자신에게 큰 문제가 있다고 생각하지 않습니다. 개선점을 제시해도, 표면적으로는 수긍하지만 진정으로 자신을 바꾸어 보려는 노력을 기울이지 않습니다.
담임 목사와 평신도 리더들과 사이 갈등의 원인 중의 하나가 목사의 자기 인식 결여라고 생각합니다. 보통 목사들은 자신이 말씀대로 살고 있는 것처럼 설교합니다. 그러나 목사와 가까이 있는 리더들은, 목사의 가르침과 삶 사이의 괴리를 봅니다. 그렇기 때문에 이중인격자로 보이고, 설교가 귀에 안 들어오고, 진심으로 순종하기가 어렵습니다. 그러면서 갈등이 야기됩니다.
좋은 목사가 되려면 자신을 명확하게 인식해야 합니다. 자신이 잘 하는 것과 못하는 것을 분명히 알고, 앞으로 되어질 자신이 모습과, 현재의 자기 모습 차이를 분명히 보아야 합니다. 그럴 때 동역자들이 신뢰하고 따릅니다.
그러기 위해서는 지속적으로 이웃의 말에 귀를 열고, 자신을 바꾸려고 노력해야 합니다. 일반 교인들의 말보다, 가깝게 동역하는 리더들의 말에 더 귀를 기울여야 합니다.
평신도 리더들은, 담임 목사가 자기 인식 한계에 도달했다 싶으면, 있는 그대로 받아드려야 합니다. 아니면 동역도 어렵고, 믿음도 자라지 않습니다. (변화하겠다는 반복적인 약속에도 불구하고 진전이 없으면, 한계점에 도달했다고 보는 것이 좋습니다. ^^;)
담임 목사는 자신을 바꾸려는 노력을 포기하지 않고, 평신도 리더들은 목사의 자기 인식 한계를 수용한다면, 담임 목사의 한계에도 불구하고 비신자들이 예수를 믿고, 성도들의 삶이 변하고, 교회가 성장할 것입니다.
교회는 그리스도의 몸이고, 예수님이 교회의 머리이시기 때문입니다.
