계명을 지키려 마세요 (Don’t Try to Keep Commandments)-영어/한글
Immediately after I accepted Jesus as my savior and lord, I felt like I was on cloud nine. All my past sins were forgiven, and I was given the chance to start a brand new life!
But this elation didn’t last long. It turned into disappointment as I struggled in my Christian walk. I tried to obey his commands but miserably failed. I thought it might be due to a lack of will power, so I tried harder. I failed again. My disappointment turned into desperation then into resentment towards God, who seemed to demand a life that was beyond my ability.
Ironically, I got out of this quagmire by admitting I was not able to obey God’s commands.
Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love God with all my heart, soul, and mind and to love my neighbors as myself. No matter how hard I tried, though, I would never be able to do it. I couldn’t even keep the smallest commandment on my own!
Then why does God give us commandments at all? They are God’s list of prayer requests. God invites us to pray for these requests so that He can fulfill them in us through His power.
So I stopped trying and started praying. This freed me from guilty feelings, and His commands somehow began to be carried out in my life.
Obviously, God starts working when we stop working.

저는 서른 한 살, 미국 대학원에서 박사 공부할 때 예수님을 주님으로 영접하였습니다. 영접한 후에 과거의 모든 죄를 용서받고, 새로운 피조물이 되었다는 것이 너무나도 감격스러웠습니다. 고후 5:17절을 읽을 때마다 눈물이 줄줄 흘렀습니다.
그런데 이러한 흥분이 가라 앉으면서 절망감이 찾아오기 시작하였습니다. 하나님께서 과거의 죄를 모두 용서하시고, 새로운 삶의 기회를 주셨는데, 하나님의 기대에 부응하는 삶을 살지 못한다는 자괴감 때문이었습니다. 계명대로 살려고 노력했지만 번번히 실패했고, 의지력이 부족한가 싶어서 더 노력해 보았지만, 잠시 되는 듯 싶다가 다시 옛날로 돌아갔습니다. 이런 일이 반복되니까, 실망감이 절망감이 되었고, 지킬 수도 없는 계명을 지키라는 하나님에 대한 원망에까지 이르렀습니다.
그런데 역설적으로, 자신이 계명대로 살 수 없다는 깨달음으로 이 절망에서 벗어날 수 있었습니다.
예수님께서, 성경에서 가장 큰 계명은 마음과 목숨과 뜻을 다해 하나님을 사랑하고, 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑하는 것이라고 하셨습니다. 그런데 이것이 인간의 노력이나 수양으로 될 수 있는 일입니까? 큰 것뿐 아니라 작은 것까지도 성경에 기록된 계명은 인간의 힘으로 지킬 수 있는 것이 하나도 없습니다!
그렇다면 지킬 수도 없는 계명을 왜 주셨을까? 계명은 자신의 힘으로 지키라는 지시 사항 이라기보다, 지켜지도록 기도하라는 기도 제목 입니다.
노력하는 대신에 기도하니까 죄책감이 사라질뿐 아니라, 실제로 계명이 지켜지기 시작했습니다. 하나님께서는 노력을 포기하고 기도할 때 비로소 일하기 시작하시는 것 같습니다.
