4차 팬데믹, 어쩌면 좋지? (Facts about Covid 19 Delta Variant)- 영어/한글
When Covid-19 was spreading rapidly through Korea last year, many churches that were scheduled to sponsor house church seminars planned to cancel them. I urged them to reconsider because I was convinced that contagion could be prevented if participants wore masks the entire time. This conviction was supported by incidences of several large masked gatherings that did not cause mass infection.
Pastors changed their minds, and about 40 house church seminars for lay people and 10 house church seminars for pastors were held during the last 12 months. And there was not a single confirmed Covid case.
If the members of the sponsoring churches or the seminar attendees were infected by the Covid virus, I realized I would be responsible. So I have followed the development of the Covid-19 situation closely. There are a few facts about the Covid situation I’d like to share.
1. As a general rule, viruses that cause more fatalities tend to be less contagious and vice versa. An example is the SARS epidemic which started in November, 2002, and ended in July, 2003, in Korea. The virus was deadly but didn’t affect many people. The Covid-19 Delta variant spreads more easily than the SARS or the original Covid-19 viruses, but it seems less fatal.
2. Korean health officials sometimes give the impression that herd immunity will be achieved when 70% of people get their first vaccine dose. This is not true. Herd immunity for Covid-19 has not been achieved in any country. Even if it is possible, it can be achieved only when 70% or more people receive two vaccine shots, not a single shot.
3. People who received both doses of the vaccine still sometimes get infected by the Covid virus. People call it a breakthrough infection, giving the impression that the vaccine shot is ineffective and vulnerable to the virus attack. But no vaccine shots are 100% effective. Even if it’s 99.9% effective, still 0.1% of people would get infected. The fact is that the vaccination is very effective against Covid-19 and the Delta variant. The sharp increase of confirmed cases in the US is caused by those who had refused to get the vaccine and got infected as a result.
4. No one was infected during Sunday worship services in a church sanctuary in Korea, contrary to public belief. The reported cases were due to members eating and singing without wearing masks outside of the worship service. I believe normal church activities are possible as long as people strictly adhere mask-wearing.

작년 봄 코로나가 장기화 조짐이 보일 때, 가정교회 세미나를 주최하는 교회들이 예정된 세미나를 취소하려는 조짐이 보였습니다. 그러나 마스크를 벗고 밥이나 술을 먹든지, 말하거나 노래 하지만 않으면, 집단 감염은 염려할 필요가 없다는 확신이 제게 있었습니다. 코로나 상황에서 개최되었던 대형 집회에서, 참석자들이 모두 마스크를 착용했기 때문에 집단 감염이 발생하지 않았던 몇몇 사례들이 확신을 더해주었습니다.
제가 독려를 한 결과, 작년 하반기와 금년 상반기 12개월 동안, 방역 수칙을 철저히 지키면서, 약 40개의 교회가 평신도를 위한 가정교회 세미나를 대면/비대면으로 개최했고, 약 10개의 교회가 목회자를 위한 세미나를 개최했습니다. (세미나를 통해 감염된 사례는 물론 한 건도 없었습니다.)
코로나 가운데 세미나를 개최하도록 권장한 장본인이라 책임감이 느껴져서, 저는 코로나 상황에 깊은 관심을 갖고 추이를 살피고 있습니다. 현재 4차 팬데믹이 진행 중인데, 과도한 기대와 두려움을 갖고 있는 분들을 있는 것 같습니다. 그래서 현재까지 밝혀진 몇 가지 사실을 알려드립니다.
1. 바이러스는 일반적으로 치사율이 높으면 전파력이 약하고, 전파력이 강하면 치사율이 낮습니다. 코로나 19와 같은 종류인 사스 바이러스가 치사율은 높았지만 널리 전파되지 않았던 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 코로나 델타 변이가 확산력이 강해 거리 두기와 감염 차단에 의존하는 방역이 거의 불가능해진 이때, 중증에 걸릴 확률이 높은 사람들의 예방과 치료에 집중하고, 건강한 사람들은 가볍게 앓도록 두어 집단 면역이 생기도록 하는 것이 좋지 않겠느냐는 의견이 나오는 이유입니다.
2. 정부당국에서 국민의 70% 이상이 1차 접종을 마치면 집단 면역이 생길 것 같은 인상을 주는데, 사실이 아닙니다. 하나의 바람일 뿐이고, 코로나 집단 면역 사례는 없습니다. 집단 면역이 생긴다 해도, 1차 접종으로는 안 되고 2차 접종까지 받은 사람이 70% 이상이 되어야 됩니다. 코로나 백신은 1차 접종 효능은 30~60%뿐이고, 2차 접종까지 완료해야 효능이 90% 이상을 넘깁니다.
3. 2차 접종까지 마친 사람이 양성으로 판정되었을 때 ‘돌파 감염’ 이라는 용어를 사용하여 백신 방역이 뚫리고, 백신 접종 효능이 없는 것 같은 인상을 주는데, 그렇지 않습니다. 두 번의 접종이 99.99%의 효능을 가져온다 할지라도, 0.01%에게는 효능이 없기 때문에, 두 번 접종을 받아도 감염되는 사람은 있기 마련입니다. 2차 접종까지 마친 사람들은 절대 다수가, 코로나 19는 물론 델타 변이에도 감염되지 않습니다. 그러니까 무슨 일이 있어도 2차 접종까지 받아야 합니다. (현재 급증하는 미국 감염자들은, 거의 모두 백신을 안 맞고 있다가 델타 변이에 의해 감염된 사람들입니다.)
4. 주일 예배를 통해 감염된 사례는 전에도 없었고, 지금도 없습니다. 지금까지 교회에서 발생된 집단 감염은, 예배 때문이 아니라 마스크를 벗고 같이 밥을 먹었다든가, 찬양 연습을 했기 때문입니다.
