세대주의 종말론자의 회심 (Revelation Is Not About History, But Church)-영어/한글
When I accepted Jesus in the 1970s, expectation was high among evangelical Christians that the second-coming of Christ was imminent. Many believed that they would be “raptured,” meeting Christ in the air during their lifetime. Some professors at Dallas Theological Seminary provided theological grounds for this idea, called premillennialism, and I was completely swept up with it.
Things obviously didn’t turn out the way the proponents expected. They had predicted that the Rapture would occur within 30 or 40 years after the independence of Israel, but it didn’t happen. They believed that the ten horns of the beast described in the book of Revelation represented the number of countries that would join the European Union. It was said that when that number was reached, the greatest battle in human history, the battle between good and evil, would take place in the valley of Armageddon in the land of Israel. But even after the EU exceeded ten nations, there was no war. I began to doubt the premillennialists interpretation of the book of Revelation.
I was also unable to find an alternative interpretation I could agree with.
I recently read a book entitled How to Read the Book of Revelation by professor P.C. Lee. His thesis is that Revelation was not written to predict the future, but to encourage churches under persecution. This book changed my perspective on Revelation. I came to realize that I hadn’t been able to find an agreeable interpretation on Revelation because I had been fixated on the idea that the book was about history, or more specifically, how human history would end.
Although Professor Lee’s view was new to me. I have found that most pastors in Korea hold views similar to his. I have been ignorant! If there are people who are still holding on to my old view on Revelation, I strongly recommend reading this book.

1974년, 제가 만 30살 때 예수님을 주님으로 영접했을 때, 복음주의자들에게는 세대주의적 종말론이 대세였습니다. 예수님의 재림을 자신이 죽기 전에 경험하게 되리라는 기대감이 팽배해 있었습니다. 이 종말론은, 보수적인 신학의 보루였던 달라스 신학대학의 많은 교수들이 지지했기 때문에, 신빙성이 있어 보였습니다.
그러나 세대론적 종말론을 주장하는 사람들이 예고한대로 역사가 펼쳐지지 않았습니다. 이스라엘 국가가 건립된 지 한 세대가 지나기 전에 휴거가 일어날 것이라고 예고했지만, 30~40년이 지나도 휴거는 일어나지 않았습니다. 요한 계시록에 등장하는 짐승의 열 개의 뿔이 유럽 연합을 의미하며, 연합 국가 숫자가 열 개가 될 때, 인류 역사상 최대의 전쟁, 아가멧돈 전쟁이 일어날 것이라고 예언했지만, 유럽연합국 숫자가 10이 되고 11이 되어도 전쟁은 일어나지 않았습니다. 그러면서 저는 세대주의적종말론에 회의를 갖게 되었습니다.
그러나 진심으로 동의할 수 있는 다른 종말론을 발견할 수는 없었습니다.
그러던 중 최근에 이필찬 교수의 ‘요한계시록 어떻게 읽을 것인가’를 읽게 되었습니다. 제 마음에 가장 크게 와 닿았던 부분은, 계시록의 핵심은 ‘역사’가 아니고 ‘교회’라는 것이었습니다. 제가 지금까지 세대론적인 종말론에서 벗어나지 못했던 것은, 계시록이 인간 역사의 종말을 그리고 있다고 생각했기 때문이었다는 것을 깨달으며, 눈이 번쩍 뜨이는 느낌이었습니다.
이필찬 교수는, 사도 요한이 핍박 받는 교회들을 위로하고 격려하기 위하여 요한 계시록을 기록했다고 말합니다. 많은 상징적인 표현을 구약의 예언서에서 빌려왔고, 당시 정치적인 상황을 배경으로 사용하여, 하나님께서 핍박 가운데 교회를 위해서 무슨 일을 하고 계신지를 설명하고 있다고 말합니다.
일곱 인, 일곱 나팔, 일곱 대접 등의 사건도 역사적으로 펼쳐질 일을 순서대로 나열한 것이 아니라, 교회가 현재 겪고 있고, 앞으로 겪을, 같은 사건들을 지상에서 본 관점과 하늘에서 본 관점에서 기록하고 있다고 말합니다. 계시록에 예고된 환난은 하나님의 백성들이 아니라 하나님을 대적하는 사람들을 대상으로 한 것이고, 악한 세력들과 싸우면서 겪게 될 고난만이 하나님의 백성들을 향한 것이라고 설명합니다. 이런 설명들이 무척 설득력이 있었습니다.
미국 복음주의자들 중에는 아직도 세대주의자가 많은데, 알고 보니 한국에서는 보수적인 신학교에서도 현천년설을 가르쳐왔고, 목회자들의 대부분이 이를 받아드리고 있었습니다.
아직도 세대주의적 종말론에 회의를 느끼지만 이를 확실히 버리지 못하는 분들이 있다면 이 책을 추천하고 싶습니다.
