포기하면 길이 보인다, (The Answer May Lie in Giving Up)-영어/한글
We sometimes encounter unsurmountable obstacles in life. However, as it happens, it’s not trying harder but ceasing trying that helps overcome these obstacles in many cases.
One example is Alcoholics Anonymous. It is the organization which tries to help people quit drinking. Someone who joins a meeting for the first time is asked to stand up amongst the group and say, “My name is John, and I’m an alcoholic.” Admitting he is an alcoholic is the first step. The second step, the most important one, is to admit that he is powerless to quit drinking. Then he goes through 12 steps for recovery. Once alcoholics cease to try to stop drinking, strangely, recovery begins.
Similar things happen in marriage. Many marital problems result from someone trying to change his/her partner. However, when people accept the fact that their partner will not change and they stop trying to change them, that’s when actual change may begin in many cases.
Surrender is an essential element in Christian faith. When we realize we are incapable of becoming good people or living moral lives on our own efforts, we stop trying and trust Jesus. That’s when we are saved. Sanctification also begins when we give up our own efforts to live a godly life and let Jesus take over.
We often hear that we should try harder to solve our life’s problems, but the real solution may be ceasing trying and trusting Jesus.

인생을 살다 보면 빠져나갈 수 없는 상황에 처할 때가 있습니다. 가야할 방향도 보이지 않고, 해결책도 보이지 않습니다. 벗어나려고 노력하면 노력할수록, 더 깊이 상황속으로 빠져듭니다.
이럴 때에 포기하는 것이 답이 될 때가 있습니다.
포기가 답이 되는 예가 단주 협회(AA: Alcoholic Anonymous)입니다. 이 모임에서는, 술을 끊으려해도 끊을 수 없었던 사람이 모인 사람들 앞에서 자신이 술 중독자임을 고백하도록 합니다. 그리고 자신에게는 술을 끓을 힘이 없다는 것을 공개적으로 인정하도록 합니다. 이렇게 시작하여 12 단계를 밟도록 하는데, 자신의 무력을 고백하고 자신의 노력을 포기할 때 신기하게 술이 끊어집니다.
포기가 답이 되는 원리는 결혼 생활에도 볼 수 있습니다. 부부가 상대방을 바꾸려는 동안에는 배우자가 변하지 않습니다. 그러다가 어느 순간엔가 “내 배우자는 변할 수 없어,”라는 결론을 내리고 노력을 포기할 때, 이상하게 배우자가 변합니다.
신앙생활도 포기에서 시작됩니다. 자신의 노력으로는 착한 사람이 될 수 없고, 바르게 살 수 없다는 것을 인정하고 자기 노력을 포기할 때, 예수님의 구원의 역사는 시작됩니다. 노력과 수양으로 거룩한 사람이 될 수 없다는 것을 깨닫고 노력을 포기할 때, 성화도 시작됩니다.
선택이 없는데 있다고 착각하기 때문에 우리는 몸부림칩니다. 선택이 없다는 것을 인정할 때 포기가 가능해지고, 그때부터 하나님께서 일하십니다.
