적폐 청산은 이제 그만! (President Like Lincoln)-Kor/Eng
현 대통령이 ‘적폐 청산’이라는 구호를 외치며 나라를 시끄럽게 해왔는데, 새로 선출된 대통령과 측근들이 같은 용어를 입에 올려 마음을 불안하게 만듭니다.
적폐 청산은 대한민국에 어울리지 않는 용어입니다. 적폐라면 부패가 누적되었다는 뜻인데, 오늘날의 대한민국에 개선해야 할 분야가 꽤 있지만, 적폐라는 단어가 적용될 정도의 부패에서는 벗어났고, 꽤 건강해졌습니다. 자신의 정치 이념과 상치되는 것들을 적폐로 몰아 매도하는 것은 안 될 일입니다.
청산이라는 단어도 그렇습니다. 단숨에 뒤엎어 버리고, 쓸어버리겠다는 것인데, 이런 용어를 사용하기에 대한민국은 너무나도 성장했고, 커져버렸습니다. 청산이니 혁명이니, 자극적인 용어를 사용하지 말고 점진적인 개선과 개혁을 추구하는 것이 더 현실적이고 바람직합니다. 그러기 위해서는 서민들에게 유익한 시책들은 상대방 정권이 시작했다는 이유 하나만으로 무효화시키지 말고, 유지, 수정, 발전시켜야 합니다.
과거에 초점을 맞춘 적폐 청산은 복수극으로 끝나기 마련입니다. 모든 국민이 갈망하는 통합을 이루려면, 과거에 시선을 맞추기보다, 미래에 시선을 고정시켜야 합니다. 청산 대신에 용서와 관용이 키워드가 되어야 합니다.
저는 김대중 대통령의 대북 정책에 관해서 동의하지 않습니다. 많이 퍼주면 북한 정권이 바뀔 것이라는 발상이 너무 순진하고 위험하게 느껴지기 때문입니다. 그러나 개인적으로는 그분을 존경합니다. 역대 대통령 중에서 김대중 대통령처럼 정적으로부터 핍박을 많이 받은 사람이 없었습니다. 목숨을 잃을 뻔하기도 하고, 일생 동안 다리를 절어야 하는 부상을 당하기도 했습니다. 그러나 대통령이 된 후에 정적들에게 복수하려 하지 않았습니다. 김 대통령을 내란음모 죄로 엮어 투옥시키고, 고문까지 자행했던 전두환 대통령은, 김 대통령 임기 때가 가장 편했다고 말했다고 합니다.
미국의 링컨 대통령이 미국 역사학자들에 의하여 가장 위대한 대통령으로 선정되는 이유는, 미국이 둘로 분열되는 것을 막았기 때문입니다. 남부연합(Confederacy)의 포격으로 시작된 남북 전쟁은 남부연합의 패배로 끝났고, 민간인을 포함하여 60만 명의 사망자를 냈습니다. 전쟁이 종결된 후 링컨 대통령은 남부연합 지도자들에게 전쟁에 대한 책임을 묻는 대신에, 자신이 속한 공화당원들의 격렬한 반대에도 불구하고, 남부연합 정치인과 장군들에게 전면적인 사면령을 내렸습니다. 그래서 미국은 남북전쟁 후에도 합중국으로 남을 수가 있었고, 세계 최대 강국으로 부상할 수 있었습니다.
링컨같은 통 큰 대통령이 대한민국에도 등장해서 전임 대통령이 교도소에 가는 일이 더 이상 생기지 않으면 좋겠습니다. 그럴 때 진정한 국민 통합이 이루어지고 대한민국이 진정한 선진 국가로 도약할 수 있을 것입니다.

The current president JI Moon of South Korea was elected using the popular slogan, “drain the swamp,” encouraging political polarization. The newly elected President SY Yoon started using the same phrase, which I find concerning.
Korea is not a “swamp” that requires draining, but a relatively healthy democratic country. It does not require an extreme cleanse when so many things are going well. Applying such a radical slogan to Korea is inappropriate, as its only use is to inflame the public. What Korea needs is gradual improvement and renovation, not drastic measures.
To make Korea better, we should focus on the future and not the past. We should not waste our energy finding culprits for past wrongdoings but channel energy to find ways to make our country better. ‘“Forgive and forget” should be the catch phrase.
President Lincoln is widely considered the best US president by historians. His greatest achievement was keeping the United States undivided after the Civil War. It was the southern Confederacy that both started the war and lost it. The war resulted in 600,000 deaths, including civilians. However President Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Amnesty right after the war, granting pardons to all politicians and soldiers of the Confederacy (excepting a few special cases), despite strong opposition from his own party. Because of this policy the country remained as one nation and was able to become the strongest global power in the world.
I pray that someday Korea will produce a president as gutsy as Lincoln and stop sending former presidents to prison, which seems to have become the normal practice lately.
