HISTORICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL SURVEY
God as an Ultimate Concern
In the light of this interconnections, it is just necessary to understand Tillich s theology in order to know the new theology, non-religionization, the gospel of Christian atheism, secularization, and situation ethics. Whatever it must become God when it has the ultimate nature. It is the very God of whom he speaks. But the Ultimate Concern or Ultimate Reality has always appeared as a symbolic expression.
Difference between Symbol and Sign
Symbol and Sign are the same term used when it points out and expresses a certain transcendent One, and both play the same role. For instance, the red light of the traffic signal points to stop. But its light color is not significant, but the significance of the signal, the sign to stop the cars, is important. In this way, the sign is convenient when it points to transcend itself. This is the feature of the sign.
Symbol and Meaning
In this point, the symbol also is not different from sign. For instance, the image of Buddha in Buddhism points to the mind of Buddha, namely Ultimate Reality taking place in the image of Buddha. In this way, the red light before the cross-way and the image of Buddha or the image of Christ on the holy picture are different from each other.
That is following: The signal is a simple sign or a mark, but the image of Buddha or the image of Christ on the holy picture is a symbol. This is the difference.
Symbol and History
Because the symbol is related to history, it can t be changed by the free will of anyone. Because it has been seared with a hot iron in the mind of a myriad of the people, this symbol related to history has had everlasting historical meaning through the past, present, and future.
Symbol and Religion.
Symbol has been pointing the thing that has transcended itself, and has been mysteriously attracted man by the power to influence which it has. Accordingly, the expression of religion can not be expressed by anything but a symbol. The religious expression of the picture of the image of the saints in the Temple or the Church and the sacred books of religions have a symbolic character.
All the documents of the miracle and sign, history of Creation, Virgin Birth of Christ, Cross, Resurrection, Ascension, and Parousia are the only symbol.
They are, Tillich said, no more than the sign which expresses an ultimate concern, religious feeling, and holy feeling.
Therefore, he used the terms, sin, heaven, cross, and resurrection, like the conservative theologian, but his theological conceptions of them are quite different from those of the conservative. 💟💟💟
