REVIEW OF THE LITERATURES:
PHILOSOPHICAL AND THEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK OF THE CONCEPTS AND EXISTENCE OF GOD HISTORICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL SURVEY
THE ARGUMENTS FOR EXISTENCE OF GOD

The Criticism on The Clark s Statement

Dr. William Newton Clark has systemized his theological concept of God s existence, broadly dealing with the subject of the existence of God in his A Outline of Christian Theology (W. Charles Scribners Sons, 1922). This is the summarized ones from the p.105 to p.130 of the book.

Firstly, the argument for existence of God as the intellectual starting point:

(1) This is the rational method for proof of God s existence through understanding the universe. Because man is the rational existence, we can understand the rational universe, and discover the Mind, the highest Being in the universe, who is God. In this way, he says that it is possible to prove the existence of God.

But this may agree to the spiritualism of Hegel and have a tendency to the pantheism trying to identify personal God and man with the impersonal universe. In this respect, it includes Plato, Descartes, Hegel, and Paul Tillich.

(2) This is also to prove the existence of God through the concept of cause. In other words, this is to discover an ultimate Mind identified with the existence of God and define the Mind as Uncaused Cause. And then this is called God. This proof employs the relativity, but the relativity never proves the existence of God because He is an absolute One.

(3) This is to prove the existence of God through the concept of result. This is a method to prove the existence of God by discovering a Mind in the universe through the result-seeking. But this had been destroyed by the doctrine of Darwin s evolution.

For Darwin s method, conditions develop necessities, the necessities develop results, and the results develop the forces for which it seeks them.

This proof also cannot get out of the category of pantheistic polytheism. As a matter of fact, it is impossible to accept the development of an absolute Being by a change according to the evolution of Darwin.

Secondly, the argument for the existence of God as the religious starting point:

(1) This is to discover God through the religiosity of man. Religion does not need the argument for the existence of God because it is instinctive and universal and must be accepted by the intuitive sense (innate idea). But it also must have a presupposition of the use of special revelation.

(2) This is the very proof that God is the object of faith as absolute One depending upon the idea of good and evil, and similar to the Supreme Good (Summum Bonum: Thomas Aquinas) of Kant.

(3) This is the proof that man can feel the existence of God by his spiritual experience when he contacts to the attributes of God in Christ. But God is never restrained by the subject experiences of man, but He does objectively exist.

The Clark s proofs for the existence of God mentioned above, in a sense, is valuable, but also is not sufficient to prove God who exists in Spirit. Therefore, in order to prove the existence of God, we must go back to the Bible, because it is the very testimony of which God does reveal Himself through a special revelation. 💗💗💗
