5. The Ecumenical Movement

The twentieth century saw a great rise in concern fro Christian unity, which has been manifested together. The World Council of Churches has sought to bring churches together. There have been common statements on specific doctrines following dialogue between different churches.

Evangelicals have devoted much attention to para-church bodies bringing together Christians for a common purpose, ad at the Lausanne Congress.

(1) World Council of Churches

1) The World Council of Churches (WCC) was formally constituted in 1948 at Amsterdam by delegates of 147 churched from 44 countries. It arose out of three earlier movements, the stimulus for which came from a World Missionary Conference held ar Edinburgh in 1910.

2) It functions as a forum for Protestant and Eastern Orthodox denominations, which cooperate through the WCC on a variety of undertakings and explore doctrinal similarities and differences.

3) It grew out of two post-World War I ecumenical efforts, the Life and Work Movement (which concentrated on practical activities) and the Faith and Order Movement (which focused on doctrinal issues and the possibility of reunion).

4) The impetus for these two organizations sprang from the International Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910, the first such cooperative effort since the Reformation.
