(5) Philosophers (1729- )
1) Gotthold Lessing
¨ç Gotthold Lessing who was playwright historian and critic, was one of the most prominent figures of the German Enlightenment.
¨è He was born in Kamenz in 1729, and he studied and medicine. he however was more interested in literature.
¨é As a historian, he realized that many theological issues are really historical ones. In particular, he saw that the Bible can be approached as a historial source like any other works.
¨ê He wrote a series of extracts of the work of Hermann Reimarus, who had argued that Jesus had believed the end of the world imminent; after his death his disciples claimed that he would return soon; but when this failed to happen they changed the message. And Christianity was thus based on a mistake and a deception.
¨ë He wrote "there is broad, ugly ditch of history that I cannot jump across." He believed there is a ditch between the ages of history.
¨ì He believed that the truth of religion are eternal and necessary and can, in theory, be discovered by the exercise of enlightened reason.
¨í He concluded, "The accidental truths of history can never become the proof of the necessary truths of reason."
¨î He believed that the historical religion, Christianity, Judaism and so on, play an important but limited role in the development of humanity. He however emphasized the ethical values.
¨ï He believed that different religions are therefore of equal value, since they are all historically limited and will one day become obsolete.
¨ð He argued forcibly for religious tolerance. In a sense, his argument, as a result, is the same what pluralists have insisted.
