The Modern World (1800 AD-Onwards) (Evangelicals: B. B. Warfield)
ÀåºÎ¿µ  2009-01-04 16:44:44, Á¶È¸ : 2,627

(2) B. B. Warfield (1851-1921)

1) He was born in 1851 near Lexington, Kentucky near Lexington, Kentucky. After studying at Princeton and Leipzig taught at a theological seminary in Pittsburgh from 1878 to 1887. He then became professor of didactic and polemical theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he remained until his death in 1921.

2) He is one of the representative of the Princeton school, which was founded in 1811 and in 1820 Charles Hodge (1797-1878) who held to the 'Old School Calvinism' in opposition to the 'New School Calvinism' of Finney and others, began to teach there.
(In the early years of the twentieth century there was not shortage of error to oppose, but in 1929 the seminary began to move in a liberal direction and John Grasham Machen (1881-1937), the greatest representative of the school, helped to found a new Westminster Theological Seminary to continued the old tradition- which it has done to the present day.)

3) He is best known for his exposition of the Scripture, and he was the ablest defender in his time of the traditional belief that the Bible is the inspired and infallible word of God(2 Timothy 3:16).

4) His view of the Bible is that the Bible is fully God's word and also fully the words of human authors. This can be seen from their distinctive styles and from other characteristics of the individual authors.

5) The human writers wrote freely - but they were prepared for their task by God and he revealed himself to them to the extent that was necessary for their task.

6) Fundamentalism has tended to be anti-intellectual and hostile to culture. On the other side of Warfield stand those who with to maintain the inspiration and authority of Scripture, who with it to be the final norm for faith and who would not feel free to criticize its theology - but who do not feel that this need exclude factual errors in the Bible in the areas of history or geography, say.
