4. Philip Jacob Spener (1635-1705)

(1) He was born in Alsace in 1635, who received a godly upbringing and went on to become a pastor.

(2) He was senior pastor at Frankfurt from 1666 and while there he became the 'patriarch' or chief founder of Pietism. And then he left Frankfurt in 1686 to become court chaplain at Drecden and moved on from there in 1691 to be a pastor at Berlin. He died in 1705.

(3) He hereafter began to perform the small church movement in the church under Jean de Labadie who withdrew from Jesuit, and got the nickname of John the Baptist of Geneva.

(4) He was inspired from the work 'The True Christianity' (Wahre Christenthum) written by John Arndt, and he claimed Christian piety of life stressing the importance of a living personal faith in Jesus Christ, alongside of orthodox doctrine.

(5) His Pietism movement had spread throughout the whole Germany in the early ages centering Helle University, and influenced on the life of vital faith.

(6) It had greatly influenced on the famous theologian and Pietist activists such as Bengel and G. Zinzendorf of Moravian.

(7) It also had influenced on the subjective Pietist, Schleiermacher in the thought of Pietism. It also has remained a force within the Lutheran churches.


(8) He set out his goals in a manifesto for Pietist reform, his Holy Desires (1675).

1) The Small Group meeting for Bible Study.
2) The role of spiritual priest of the believers.
3) Stress on the practical life of Christian faith.
4) Pointing out the futility of religious debates.
5) Pietist reform of theological education.
6) Reform of the pulpit (a simple reaching for piety)
