The Reformation and Reaction (1500-1800 AD) (Synod of Dort)

9. Synod of Dort (1618-1619)

(1) The controversy problem of Arminius's teaching linked with rival Dutch political factions, and there was even the danger of civil war. After a struggle the anti-Remonstrant party won and called a synod, which met at Dort (Dordrecht) from 1618 to 1619.

(2) The Remonstrance was rejected and the synod drew up a response, the 'Canons of Dort' in which the five points of Remonstrance are answered under five headings - of which the third and the fourth are combined, as the third point of the Remonstrance was considered orthodox.

(3) The points came to be seen as the 'five points of Calvinism', summed up in the mnemonic TULIP on Soteriology.

1) T = Total inability (depravity)
2) U = Unconditional election
3) L = Limited atonement
4) I = Irresistible grace
5) P = Perseverance of the saints
