ÀåºÎ¿µ  2009-01-04 15:23:10, Á¶È¸ : 2,439

(4) John Owen (1616-1683)

1) He was born in 1616 near Oxford and went to Queen's College, Oxford. But he left in 1637 because of the religious changes introduced by Laud. And he served as minister to two Essex churches.

2) He at first sympathized Presbyterian, but he moved to an Independent position. He won Cromwell's favour in 1651, and was appointed Dean of Christ Church, Oxford.

3) He was expelled from Christ Church with the restoration of monarchy in 1660. And he left Oxford and continued to preach and write until his death in 1683.

4) He was one of the authors of a set of Humble Proposal, presented to Parliament in 1652. these became the basis for Cromwell's settlement and Owen was one of the thirty-eight 'Trier' who administered it.

5) He took a leading role at the Savoy Assembly in 1658, which was a Congregationalist or Independent gathering and produced the Savoy Declaration of Faith which, unlike the Westminster Confession, has never been widely used.

6) He is known as the greatest exponent of the doctrine of 'limited atonement' in contrary to the doctrine of Arminianism which is the teaching an ineffectual atonement that the cross merely makes it possible for all to be saved. His Death of Death in the Death of Christ (1647) is the defence of the doctrine.
