The Middle Ages (West) (500-1500 AD) (Council of Orange)
ÀåºÎ¿µ  2008-11-30 00:04:22, Á¶È¸ : 2,392

4. Council of Orange (529)

(1) The Council of Orange (Arausiacum) in 529 was led by Caesaius of Arles who had the support of the pope, Felix IV.

(2) It had the background of Augustine's teaching on grace and predestination against which the south Gaul (France) had opposed.

(3) At that time Monks had the position of Semi-Pelagianism (a term coined around 1600) that God helps those who help themselves.

(4) In other words, they felt it was important to stress what we can do, and the need to get on with it, that is to say, they believed that we can make the first move on our own before God can help us to take action.

(5) The Council of Orange produced twenty-five canons of short doctrinal statements, followed by a conclusion. Above all else, Semi-Pelagianism is rejected. (the difference between prevenient grace and cooperating grace).

(6) Finally, the council condemns, not Augustine's doctrine of predestination to salvation, but the idea of predestination to evil.
