6. Benedict (480-547)
(1) The rule for the Monks, original account of the life of Benedict is found in the Dialogues of Pope Gregory I.
(2) Benedict was born in about 480 at Nursia in central Italy. He went to Rome, but he was disgusted by its low moral standards.
(3) He withdrew from the world in about 500, becoming a hermit in a cave at Subiaco. In due course others came to join him and he founded a number of small monasteries in the area.
(4) In 529 he moved with some of his disciples to Monte Cassino by local tensions, where he found a monastery, where he remained until his death in the middle of the century.
(5) Benedict is remembered primarily for his Rule for the monastic life. For example, the monks were to worship seven times daily, in accordance with Psalm 119.164. Benedict's Rule combines brevity with completeness in that it covers a wide range of eventualities in a short apace.
