7. Gregory the Great (590-604)

(1) He was born in 540 at Rome, who had a godly and aristocratic family, whose great-great grandfather was Pope Felix III. He was the last Father and The first Pope of Catholic church, who opened the Christianity of Middle Ages.

(2) He was appointed Prefect of the City of Rome, a high post for one so young in 572/573. He founded six monasteries on the family estates in Sicily and one at Rome. The last he entered himself, as his ordinary monk.

(3) He had been sent to Constantinople as the pope's representative after he was appointed one of the seven Roman deacons by the pope (about 578-83).

(4) He became abbot of his monastery in his return to Rome. In 590 the pope died and Gregory was elected to succeed him (590-604).

(5) He is known as Gregory the Great, and he is one of the popes to be both a great leader and a genuinely saintly figure.

(6) He died in 604. He is seen as the last of the four Doctors of the Latin church, after Ambrose, Jerome and Augustine.

(7) He was able to conduct the diverse spheres in the church and the state. He was an able administrator and he extended the power of the papacy in the West. He followed the though of Augustine's theology with Catholicism.

(8) He furthered the doctrine of purgatory, elevating it from a probable opinion into a dogma. He believed that souls in the purgatory could be released by the sacrifice of the mass and the prayer of others.

(9) He was engaged in controversy with the bishop of Constantinople, who had claimed for himself the title of 'Ecumenical[Universal] Patriarch'. In fact, Gregory preferred the title for himself 'servant of the servants of God'.
