18. Medieval Mysticism

(1) Mediaeval Ages (12th and 13th century) saw incredible developments in church structure and thought, with the appearance of chivalry, the great monastic and mendicant foundations, and Scholastic theology, along with the continued rise of the papacy.

(2) On the contrary, the mediaeval period witnessed some of the most profound and moving religious experiences of all time.

(3) All of the great theologians of the Middle Ages, including Anselm, Aquinas and Bernard of Clairvaux, were also spiritual writers of great depth.

(4) But there were the more great mystical writers such as Catherine of Siena, Walter Hilton, Julian of Norwich, Richard Rolla and Henry Suso.

(5) There were two strands in the mystical tradition-the intellectual and speculative approach, influenced by Neo-Platonism, and a more practical approach which stressed the imitation of Jesus Christ.

1) Meister Eckhart: sided to the spiritual one of mysticism.
2) John Tauler: sided to the practical one of mysticism.

(6) One of the first great medieval mystics was Hidegard of Bingen, a German prioress who lived in the 12th century.

(7) The fourteen century saw major developments in mystical theology throughout Europe. In England and in Germany: Richard Rolle, Meister Eckhart, John Tauler and Henry Suso.

(8) Nevertheless, all was not well within the Roman Catholic Church despite these positive developments.

(9) The criticism on the papacy and the rise of mysticism would increasingly be echoed by theologians like Wyclif, rebels like the Hussites, and ultimately Luther and the Reformation.
