5. Council of Ephesus (431 A. D.)

(1) This was third Ecumenical Council which the emperor Theodosius II called the Council of Ephesus in June 432, to resolve the controversy between Cyril and Nestorius. (Rome supported Cyril, and Antiochene party of bishops supported Nestorius, and then Nestorius was deposed).

(2) The outcome was confusion and division in the East. Alexandria was split from Antioch.

(3) Eventually there was a settlement, in 433. The primary point for which he had fought against Nestorius, the incarnation, was clearly stated.
