II. Eastern Tradition (Byzantium) (500AD-1500)

1. Byzantium

(1) The Byzantine empire had stood fast for 1,000 years.
(2) In Byzantine, Constantine had dreamed a perfect union of church and state.

(3) And then he realized the dream. Christianity was pervasive in all spheres of life as if Calvin's influence had effected to all spheres of life in Geneva.

(4) The inhabitants of the city believed that as if they were living in a fore-state of the heavenly Jerusalem.

(5) Constantinople the capitol of Byzantium was the largest and most glorious city in Europe throughout the Middle Ages.

(6) The Byzantium dominated the Balkans and Turkey, but after 6th century it had no power in the West.

(7) The emperor was the supreme ruler of Byzantium and the was also the supreme figurehead of the church as the Pope in the Western church.

(8) After the collapse the Byzantium in 1453, the Russian czar would claim a similar authority and prestige.
