3. Council of Constantinople (553 AD) (The Second Council)

The Council of Chalcedon led to division in the East (The Antiochene school supported Chalcedon while the Alexandria opposed Chalcedon and held to Cyril formula 'the one incarnate nature of the Word' (hypostatic union).

(1) The Eastern emperors struggled to resolve the controversy.

1) Chalcedon was upheld.
2) The emperor Zeno issued a Henotikon (for orthodox to be the Nicene Creed and Cyril's Twelve Anathemas).

3) Anastasius, Zeno's successor openly rejected Chalcedon(482A.D.).
4) His successors, Justin and Justinian, opted for Chalcedon and peace with Rome.

5) In 553 Justianian called the Council of Constantinople, the fifth of the ecumenical councils. It sought to appease the Monophysites by presenting a Cyrillian interpretation of Chalcedon.
