The Council of Constantinople (553 AD) (Maximus the Confessor)

4. Maximus the Confessor

(1) He was a Father of Byzantine theology and the Confessor.
(2) He was born in about 580, and became chief secretary to the emperor at Constantinople. He became a monk(614).

(3) He fled from Persian invasion to North Africa (626 A.D.)
(4) He opposed the Eastern policy ( one will of Jesus Christ)
(5) He debated over this problem with Pyrrhus, the exiled patriarch (645).
(6) He went to Rome in 649 where he took a leading part in synod.
(7) As a result of the synod Pope Martin was exiled, Maximus was also captured and brought back to Constantinople (661) (tongue and right hand were cut off).

(8) He was again sent to exile where he died in 662.
(9) His belief triumphed at the Council of Constantinople in 680-681.
