The Council of Constantinople (553 AD) (The Third Council)

5. Council of Constantinople (680-681 AD) (The Third Council)

(1) The Monophysites were not appeased by the 'Council of Constantinople' (533).

(2) Sergius, patriarch of Constantinople, proposed the formula that Christ had one 'theandric' (divine/human) energy, by which he performed both divine and human acts.

(3) On the basis of this formula, Constantinople was reunited with Egypt, but objections came from the patriarch of Jerusalem.

(4) Sergius then proposed another formula: that Jesus Christ had only one will. In fact it was also opposed by 'Maximus the Confessor'.

(5) Pope Martin called a synod at Rome which proclaimed that Jesus Christ had two wills, but he was exiled for his pains (649).

(6) Roman opposition to Monotheletism was more muted, until the time of Pope Agatho (678-81). He managed to persuade the Eastern Emperor to call another council of Constantinople, the sixth ecumenical council (680-681).

(7) The council also produced a Definition of Faith. It stated that the council has piously given its full assent to the five holy and ecumenical synod. It accepted the Chalcedon Definition in full.

(8) The third Council of Constantinople marks the end of the early development of teaching on the person of Jesus Christ and the outworking of the implications of Chalcedon Definition.

(9 It was the end of the attempt to conciliate the Monophysites in the East-which was no longer a pressing need now that they had been removed from the Byzantine Empire by the Muslim invasion.
