6. Council of Nicaea (787 AD) (The Second Council)

The Second Council of Nicaea erupted in 726 due to the iconoclasm controversy was called an iconodule Council of Nicaea.

(1) The Seventh Ecumenical Council was called to deal with the last great theological dispute of the Orthodox Church- the iconoclasm controversy.

(2) Many people in the Byzantine empire disapproved of the icon which it is intended not only as a work of art of great beauty but as an aid to devotion, both in private and in church. It was influenced by Islam and Gnosticism.

(3) The extreme Protestant Puritans felt that the use of the icons in worship was basically idolatry. They were known as the iconoclasts or icon-smashers.

(4) At last the Byzantine emperor Leo III ordered the destruction of all icons. This provoked fierce opposition.

(5) In 787 an iconodule Council of Nicaea was held which came to be seen as the seventh ecumenical council. Finally the iconodules triumphed in 843.

(6) Their final victory is still celebrated in the first Sunday in Lent as the 'triumph of Orthodoxy'.
