3. Council of Nicaea (325 AD) (The First Council)
Eventually the Council of Nicaea held in response to the teaching of Arius. It was one of the most important meetings ever held in which over three hundred bishops (318 bishops) in the presence of the emperor himself (The primary standard of Christian orthodoxy has been made for the rest of time).
(1) Arius had been condemned by a council at Alexandria in 320 AD.
(2) Arius also had been condemned by the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD.
(3) The Symbol of Nicaea:
We believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of all things, visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ
the only-begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light, true God from true God,
begotten not made,
of the same substance as the Father,
through whom all things were made, in heaven and earth;
who for us humans and our salvation came down, took flesh, and
was made human,
suffered and rose again on the third day,
ascended into heaven,
and will come to judge the living and dead.
And in the Holy spirit.
(4) Some successive emperors would openly overrule Nicaea and support the Arians. But eventually, at the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, the symbol of Nicaea would be restated as the official creed of the church.
(5) After that every council would claim only to be explaining the Symbol of Nicaea, not adding to it.
(6) Today a version of the Symbol is still recited in churches across the world as the definite statement of the Christian faith.
