TIME MANAGEMENT (06) (Overview of Time: Telling Time in Culture) (02)

(1) The event-oriented person:

1) is not too concerned with time periods

2) will bring people together without planning a detailed schedule and see what develops

3) will work over a problem or idea until resolved or exhaust, regardless of time

4) lives in the here-and-now and does not plan a detailed schedule for the future

5) is not much concerned with history, and

6) trusts in his own experience, while is careful about accepting another's experience.


(2) The future-oriented person :

1) sets time periods for accomplishing tasks, depending on the intent or purpose of the time spent

2) plans the time period carefully , in order to accomplish the most possible in the time allotted

3) is alert to the \\\"range of punctuality\\\" at the beginning and end of the time period

4) sets goals , plans ahead

5) is likely to assign a time/dollar equivalence, or a time spent/production equivalence

6) will not fear the unknown too greatly, and

7) will remember and try to reinforce times and dates.

(1) Informal Patterns of Time

1) a groups like the Sioux Indians have no word for time, or late, or waiting.

2) internal time pattern : not explicit or objective external time pattern : technical measure of time by clock


(2) Event-oriented Work

1) Westerners: considers work as the means of making money

(1) North American: college degree (unit)

(2) European and North .America : line-up responsibility \\\"get, or go ahead\\\" sense
(3) not long-lasting mutual assistance alliance

(4) more short range, impersonal, contractual, functionally specific relationships.

(5) in business time is a means of making money (4.25 dollar per hour in jobs).
(6) in a conference (Anglo-Saxons), they would delegate those details to a subcommittee for efficiency's sake


2) Non-Westerners: work is more relational

(1) Brazilian dictum (cited by Moong) \\\"those who work don't have time to make money,\\\" reflecting the almost fatalistic idea that work really won't make much difference in one's lot in life.


(2) Brazilian has two chances to get rich:

1) when he is born
2) when he gets married

(3) planning, saving and actively filling the time with work are not the best means survival.

(4) the best way is to vest time in cultivating important relationship.

(5) they develop long-lasting mutual assistance alliances.

(6) in business, they do not think time in relation to money but in relationship with regular customer (Ex. Maria story)

(7) in conferences: decision-making process

(8) no vote to cut through disagreements; discussion may go on for hours over minor points. (only in general committee)
