TIME MANAGEMENT (09) (Overview of Time: The Choleric Culture) (01)

4. THE CHOLERIC CULTURE

(1) The Sense of Late Time

1) Would you offer an excuse for arriving fifteen minutes late for a business appointment? You probably would, and a good one too.

¨ç To be that late is a social offense
¨è It is a form of insult

2) But would you bother to give an excuse if you arrived only five minutes late? Probably not.

¨ç Five minute is not considered a socially significant period of time.
¨è It involves no insult to a person's status or worth.

3) As little thirty or forty years ago, fifteen minutes was considered a basic time unit in urban America.

4) A person showing up only ten minutes late for an appointment would not be considered late and would not even mumble an apology.

5) But now, especially in urban areas of the United States, socially significant units of time are smaller, and a person arriving ten minutes after the appointed hour will offer some explanation.
