[Types and Methods of Expository Preaching] (07) (¿µ¹®) ✝️✝️✝️

1. Intensive Type of Expository Preaching (2)

Text: John 4:4-30

Firstly, the Samaritan woman had the very faith that Messiah must come in the future as her ancestors have told.

First of all, the text says: ¡°The woman said to Him I know that Messiah is coming who is called Christ¡±(4:25). But the faith in the hope is not significant when it is as far as it is an ideal or formal one. I think that the Samaritan woman also had kept her faith which she had been told from her ancestors as an ideal faith. This has been well known of considering the text as a whole. It would be discovered that the Samaritan woman had kept the prejudged faith as such in which her ancestors had wrong taught. In the text it could be known that she had kept the biased faith of religious prejudgment between the Jews and the Gentiles as such.

It is the discrimination of faith as a racial discrimination to be contradictory to the Gospel of God. We could often take an overbearing tremendous attitude as the Pharisees because we are the members of an elite, rich, and traditional church of which has the bias between the church members without even realizing it. And we could suffer from an inferiority complex as the Samaritan woman, but faith is without any discrimination.

Therefore we have to know that they in fact have no faith toward God even though the people who have the Pharisaic arrogance and the thinking of the Samaritan woman believe in God. She might believe in Him in a longing for the Messiah even if she had a general faith in the very promised Messiah that her ancestors had introduced through the law. Therefore it is very clear that she had been waiting for the Messiah, that is, Christ who would be her ultimate hope. She said to Jesus ¡°I know that Messiah is coming who is called Christ¡±(John 4:25a). Even though she knew that Messiah who is called Christ is coming, she did not know and believe that Jesus is Messiah in the presence of Him. Her faith can be described as ¡°the unfaith of the believer¡± in modern sense.

Even though ¡°the antenatal faith¡± which some people has taken over from their mother¡¯s womb must be a great blessing, it may remain as it is ¡°the faith of the believer¡± if they will not have met Jesus in face as the Samaritan woman. We have to reflect on what we fall into such a state of faith putting the hand on our heart. We must not indulge in the very self-righteousness that hold fast to a formal faith in the Law as if it has been taken over from our ancestors as the Pharisee in the Bible.

Even if it is very important that we keep the holy Sunday, give the tithe and offerings, and fast twice in a week, in fact most important is it that we do spiritually and personally meet Jesus, and possess true faith. Samaritan woman did expect that Messiah who called Christ, heard through her ancestors must be coming. Moreover she had been living alone as a sinner who had had six husbands spending the time under the pressure of guilty conscience without hope, nevertheless she was looking forwards to Messiah called Christ who must be coming in the future.

He visited his home and give the salvation to their family as well as God met Zaccaheus who climbed up into a sycamore tree to eagerly see Jesus Christ taking no account of the public eye, God does not require us to pay money or somethings of the world, but our body and heart. The LORD said to Samuel, \\"Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart\\"(1 Sam. 16:7). Paul the Apostle also asked not to get the material as money but the body and heart of the brethren.

God will seek and meet us when we are looking forward to Jesus the Lord, and waiting for Him. We can live with God when we have the faith looking forwards to Him at home or workplace. Today¡¯s text shows that Jesus visits the people who are seeking Him. ¡°Ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find knock and it will be open to you¡±(Matt. 7:7).
Hallelujah Amen.
