1. Intensive Type of Expository Preaching (2)

Secondly, the most remarkable example of the expository sermon is the sermon with the theme compared to ¡°the world which is spiritually thirsty¡± of which is the expository preaching on the text ¡°Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.¡± In this expository sermon, the most important passage with which is selected and intensively dealt is ¡°every one who thirsts.¡± The background of the text of this expository preaching is the story of the prophet who is preaching the words of God reminding of the picture of a water seller shouting himself hoarse for selling the water at an oriental market, therefore it will be analyzed, illustrated, and applied as the following:

(1) displayed products: wine and milk
(2) price-setting: without money and without price
(3) customers: everyone who thirsts

The contents of the text Is. 55:1 is ¡°Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.¡± This passage has been analyzed, expounded, and applied to three contents. First of all, it is important that the water-seller is selling the products which are the wine, the milk, in particular, without money and without price. This everyone who does spiritually thirst means whoever does not drink the living water suffering from sins. And these products mean the wine and milk, which have deeply spiritual significance. The wine is the food just needed to the people of Israel at those times, and spiritually means the precious blood of Christ.

The wine is directly connected with life of the people in the Palestine with many deserts because it is the living water sustaining their life. Moreover it is very significant that the wine symbolizes the precious blood of Jesus Christ. And it is connected with the spiritual life because the sinners can not be redeemed without precious blood of Christ. Therefore, in order for the sinner to be born again and get a new life, he must rely on the merit of Christ. In this sense the wine must spiritually mean the core of Gospel.

And the milk is very significant because it means the milk of life getting from the sheep. The Bible does spiritually teach with these drinks because these are the most important breads of life for the people of Israel. And thus we can know how the preacher does intensively study in the context at that time, and extract the principle of the message from the text, and apply to the preaching context.

By the way, problem is how can buy the living water without money and without price of which factors must be just needed to the life of man. There is no goods which can be purchased without price. What is without price means that it can be compared to nothing to do with, and that it is absolute. The relative things just have those prices. In other words, there is nothing to be compared, but what is without price means there is nothing to be compared. It also means to be absolute. It also does mean what to be distributed without price. As a matter of fact, the precious blood must not be relative one which can be countable with price like some products.
