[A hard saying to understand] (22) (What is Original Sin?) (¿µ¹®)
¿øÁË (Peccatum Originale)¶õ ¹«¾ùÀΰ¡? ❓❓❓

There are some people among the Christians, who deny the original sin of man. The people must not stand in the position of Reformed theology but Pelagianism, Arminianism, Socinianism, modern Liberalism, and even Barthianism of the theology of crisis denied the original sin which began with Adam. And they accept the only actual sin which they themselves actually sinned. Therefore it has broken off the spiritual, moral, and natural relation of his descendants. Focussing on the only actual sin, they take the salvation for the works depending on the free-will of man. Therefore if we deny the original sin, Adam's sin, our sins, and the merit of Christ are meaningless for all of us.

Paul the Apostle briefly summarized well on the original sin of Adam and the redemption of Christ. \"Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come\"(Rom. 5:14). \"For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous\"(Rom. 5:17-19).

I am going to introduce the Systematic Theology written by Louis Berkhof in order to theologically further more understand the original sin. The sinful state and condition in which men are born is designated in theology by the name peccatum originale, which is literally translated in the English \"original sin (Psalm 51:5; 1 Cor. 15:22).\" This sin is called \"original sin,\" (1) because it is derived from the original root of the human race; (2) because it is present in the life of every individual from the time of his birth, and therefore cannot be regarded as the result of imitation; and (3) because it is the inward root of all the actual sins that defile the life of man.

The tendency of apparent in the Greek Church finally culminated in Pelagianism, which flatly denied all original sin. In the Latin Church a different tendency appeared especially in Tertullian, according to whom the propagation of the soul involved the propagation of sin. He regarded original sin as a hereditary sinful taint or corruption. Ambrose advanced beyond Tertullian by regarding original sin as a state and by distinguishing between the inborn corruption and the resulting guilt of man. It is especially in Augustin that the doctrine of original sin comes to fuller development. According to him the nature of man, both physical and moral, is totally corrupted by Adam's sin, so that he cannot do otherwise than sin.

This inherited corruption or original sin is a moral punishment for the sin of Adam. It is such a quality of the nature of man, that in his natural state, he can and will do evil only. He has lost the material freedom of the will, and it is especially in this respect that original sin constitutes a punishment. In virtue of this sin man is already under condemnation. It is not merely corruption, but also guilt. Anselm's view of original sin as consisting of the guilt of nature (the nature of the entire human race), contracted by a single act of Adam, and the resulting inherent corruption of human nature, handed down to posterity and manifesting itself in a tendency to sin. Generally speaking, the Reformers were in agreement with Augustin.

Today also there are the people who deny the original sin giving up the orthodox doctrines following Pelagius, Arminius, Socinus,, and modern Liberalists. If we deny the original sin, Adam cannot be our type any more, and we don't need Christ any more. And it will be resulted in that the salvation and perish of man must be depended on the works of man. Adam's sin as original sin involves the serious contents. Its one time offense (original sin) must cause diverse offenses (actual sins), and must lead to death of the soul and body in the end. The original sin is the root of all the sins, therefore as long as it is not removed, men cannot be redeemed and led to eternal death. But if the original sin which is the root of all the sins can be removed, all the sins also must be removed, and led to eternal life in the end.
