은퇴 목사가 계급장만 뗄 수 있다면 (An Advice to Retired Pastors)-영어/한어
It is customary for pastors to stop attending their churches once they retire. Some denominations in the US require retired pastors to move 50 miles or more away from their home churches. The intention is to give their successors freedom to minister without interference from the former pastor.
I admit that this kind of regulation is necessary, but it’s hard on retired pastors. They are forced to sever all relationships with former church members - relationships that have been built over many years. Retired pastors in Korea have a hard time finding a place to worship on Sunday because younger pastors feel uncomfortable when they see old retired pastors sitting in the congregation.
In the House Church, pastors are actually encouraged to stay as members after retirement. They are even encouraged to serve as a shepherd if possible. The house church is a family-like community, in which the senior pastor is a father figure. Asking pastors to leave after they retire is like kicking fathers out of the house when they get old.
However, retired pastors must follow a couple of rules in order to stay. First, they must consider themselves as just church members, not pastors. Second, they should suppress the urge to coach their successors or criticize them. They must be cooperative and follow the new pastor’s leadership just like any other members do.
It they are unable to do so, it’s better for them to leave for the sake of the church.
Since I retired from Seoul Baptist Church, I served as a shepherd for a year, fulfilling all the duties of shepherds. However I had to step down due to my frequent speaking engagements and became an ordinary church member like anyone else. Then I attended only Sunday worship services and house church meetings, lest my presence draw church members’ attention away from the current pastor.

목회자가 은퇴하면 먼 곳으로 이사를 가든지 교회에 나타나지 않는 것이 관행인 것 같습니다. 은퇴한 목사는 교회에서 50마일 (약 80km) 이내에 살 수 없다고 교단법으로 못박은 미국 교단도 있습니다. 후임 목사가 방해 받지 않고 소신껏 목회할 수 있도록 하기 위함일 것입니다.
그러나 은퇴한 목회자 쪽으로는 슬픕니다. 수십년을 생사 고락을 같이했던 교인들을 떠나 홀로 살아야 합니다. 한국에서는, 주일이면 예배 드릴 곳을 찾아 방황해야 합니다.
가정교회에서는 은퇴한 목사가 교회에 남는 것을 원칙으로 삼고 있습니다. 가정교회가 진정한 가족 공동체라면, 담임 목사는 아버지이고, 은퇴한 목사는 할아버지입니다. 은퇴한 목사에게 교회를 떠나라고 하는 것은 쓸모가 없어졌다고 할아버지를 집에서 내쫓는 것과 마찬가지입니다.
은퇴 목사가 계급장 떼고 일반 교인으로 돌아가, 후임 목사를 코칭 하려는 충동을 억제하고, 절대적으로 순종할 수만 있다면, 교회에 남는 것이 본인을 위해서도, 교인들을 위해서도 좋습니다. 오래동안 은퇴 목사와 교인들 간에 쌓아진 사랑의 관계가 지속될 수 있기 때문입니다. (가정교회에서는 은퇴 목사가 목자가 되어 목양을 계속하도록 권장합니다.)
저는 은퇴한 후에 후임 목사 중심으로 교인들이 뭉칠 기회를 주기 위하여 2년 동안 한국에 나와 살았습니다. 2년 후 휴스턴으로 돌아가서, 목자로 섬겼습니다. 다른 목자들과 똑같이, 목자로서의 의무를 다하였습니다.
그러나 잦은 외부 집회 인도로 인해 더 이상 목자로 섬기기 어려워서, 1년 후 젊은 부부를 목자로 세우고 그 목장 식구가 되었습니다. 목자 사역을 내려 놓은 후에는, 후임 목사에게 집중되어야 할 시선이 저에게 쏠리지 않도록, 목장 모임과 주일 예배 외에는 어떤 공식 모임에도 나타나지 않았습니다.
가정교회뿐만이 아니라 모든 교회에서도 은퇴 목사가 계속 그 교회에 머무는 것이 관행이 되면 좋겠습니다. 그러나 이렇게 될 수 있을지 없을지는, 전적으로 은퇴 목사에게 달렸습니다. 후임 목사 목회에 자신이 간섭하게 될 것 같고, 후임 목사에게 절대적으로 순종할 자신이 없으면, 스스로 교회를 떠나주는 것이 교회를 위해 해줄 수 있는 최고의 배려와 사랑이라고 생각합니다.
