사랑은 감정이 아니라 행위(Love Is Not Emotion but Action)-영어/한글
Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God and to love our neighbors (Matt 22:34-40).
How do we love God? Many think of loving God as having warm feelings for Him, but it’s not. This love is not a feeling but an action. It means obeying him. Jesus said If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.” (John 14:23) When we are in love, we want to do whatever the other person wants. Likewise, when we love God, we do what God wants. It’s called obedience.
How do we love our neighbors? Loving our neighbor does not mean simply being fond of them, because Biblical love is not a feeling but an action. Jesus told the parable of the sheep and the goats. In it, the sheep were destined for Heaven. He commended the sheep for their actions: “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was sick and you looked after me.” (Matt 25:35~36). Biblical love is meeting our neighbors’ needs.
So, Christian life is not that complicated. Obey God and serve people. That’s it!

제가 성경 공부를 인도할 때 이런 질문을 던진 적이 있습니다. “어떻게 하는 것이 사랑입니까?” 저는, 즉시 답이 나올 줄 알았습니다. 그런데 의외로 한참동안 침묵이 흘렀습니다. 그때 많은 크리스천들에게 사랑은 추상적인 개념이지, 실천되는 삶이 아니라는 것을 깨달았습니다.
예수님께서 가장 큰 계명은 마음과 뜻과 목숨을 다해 하나님을 사랑하는 것과, 이웃을 내 몸과 같이 사랑하는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(마태22:34-40).
하나님을 어떻게 사랑하는가? 순종하는 것입니다(요한복음서 14:23). 감정이 아닙니다. 행위입니다. 사랑에 빠졌을 때에는 사랑하는 상대가 하자는 대로 합니다. 하나님을 사랑하는 사람은, 하나님이 원하시는 것을 합니다. 순종합니다.
이웃을 어떻게 사랑하는가? 이웃 사랑도 감정이 아닙니다. 행위입니다. 예수님께서 양과 염소 비유에서, 천국 갈 사람들을 칭찬하신 것도 그들의 행위 때문이었고, 지옥 갈 사람들을 꾸짖은 것도 그들의 행위 때문이었습니다(마태 25:35~36). 성경에서 말하는 사랑은 이웃의 필요를 채워주는 것, 즉 섬김입니다.
그리고 보면 크리스천의 삶이 썩 복잡하지 않습니다. 하나님께 순종하고, 이웃을 섬기며 살면 됩니다.
