I am currently visiting my daughter Christine in the US. There is a relatively minor thing that makes me feel that living in Korea is better than living here - tipping. Waiters and waitresses in Korea receive a salary, so there are no tips. But in the US tipping is a part of their income and customers are forced to tip. A tip is supposed to be a sign of gratitude for the service rendered, but now it has become an obligation. I try to be generous with tips, but sometimes it annoys me when it is demanded, even when there were practically no services rendered. I love Korea where there is no such irritation.
Korea has become my permanent residence since I restored my Korean citizenship 2 years ago. What I like most about living in Korea is that I am surrounded with people who have the same skin color as mine and speak the same language as I do. Even though I lived in the US for more than 50 years, obviously I did not feel completely at home there.
The main reason I decided to make Korea my permanent residence was because I can do more to help the house church movement in Korea than in the US.
A secondary reason, however, was that I wanted to live out my final days in Korea. It seems most likely that I will spend my last days in some kind of a medical facility. If it were in the US, it would be hard for me to communicate because English is not my mother tongue. Besides, the food wouldn¡¯t be as agreeable as rice and kimchi.
Maybe I am like a salmon, with a homing instinct beyond my control. Or maybe I just really dislike tipping.
