신학 용어 사용 않는 이유 (Avoiding Using Theological Terms)-영어/한어
I avoid using theological terms when I preach or teach, so some seminary professors tease me, calling me an anti-theologian. It’s not theology itself but theological terms that I actually try to avoid using in ministry.
Theological terms offer the advantage of making theological concepts concise and precise, but they have the disadvantage of becoming inaccurately associative with time. For example, while many conservative Christians would readily agree that men and women are equal in Christ and women should be treated the same as men, they may oppose feminism because of the negative concepts attached to the word.
Some theological terms may have a similar effect. Most Christians would agree with the following statements “If you accept Jesus, you will become a child of God,” and “God called you for a purpose.” But if the theological terms “human will” or “God’s election” are tossed into the conversation, an argument is likely to erupt.
So as a proponent of the House Church model, whose focus is on restoring the Biblical church, I prefer using specific terms from the Bible to theological terms. I would say, “All Christians are part of the same body of Christ, and no one is useless or dispensable,” instead of using the term “the priesthood of all believers” because the latter is full of theological implications.

저는 설교할 때나, 성경 공부 인도할 때 신학적 용어 사용을 피합니다. 그래서, 가정교회 교수님들은 저를 안티 신학자라고 놀리기도 하지만, 제가 거부하는 것은 신학이 아니라, 목회 현장에서 신학 용어를 사용하는 것입니다.
신학 용어는 사용되다 보면 불가피하게 고정 관념을 형성하기 때문에, 논쟁을 불러 일으키기 쉽습니다. 예를 들면, 그리스도 안에서 여성이나 남성이나 동일하다, 직장에서 여성은 능력에 따라 남성과 같은 처우를 받아야 한다고 말하면, 크리스천이라면 거의 모두가 동의할 것입니다. 그러나 ‘페미니즘’이라는 용어를 사용하여 여성의 권리를 논하면, 많은 사람들이 거부감을 느낄 것입니다. 페미니즘이라는 단어가 연상시키는 부정적인 이미지 때문입니다.
“누구든지 예수님을 영접하면 구원 받는다.”라든가, “하나님께서는 당신의 목적을 위해 우리를 불러주셨다.”라는 명제에 반대하는 크리스천은 거의 없을 것입니다. 그러나 ‘인간의 자유 의지’나 ‘하나님의 선택’이라는 신학적 용어를 사용하여 의견을 제시하면, 결론 없는 긴 논쟁이 벌어지기 쉽습니다. 이런 용어들이 특정 신학 이론을 대표하게 되었기 때문입니다.
이러한 이유 때문에, ‘성경대로’를 고집하고, 성경 말씀에 대한 ‘단순한 이해와 순종’을 표방하는 가정교회에서는, 신학적인 용어보다는, 성경에 기록된 표현을 그대로 사용하는 것이 좋다고 생각합니다. 예를 들어 만인대제상이라는 신학 용어보다는, “성도는 모두 그리스도의 지체이며 쓸모 없는 지체는 하나도 없습니다.”라는 식으로 표현하는 것이, 안 믿는 사람과 새로 믿는 사람들이 공존하는 목회 현장에서는, 더 바람직하다고 생각합니다.
이나 저나, 신학 용어를 나열하여 자신의 지적 빈곤을 호도하거나, 하나님에 대한 체험적 지식의 결핍을 감추려는 시도는 절대적으로 거부되어야 합니다.
