선교는 대사명에서 시작? (The Mission of God)-영어/한글
Two professors and five pastors have formed a book club. The team leader, Professor Hong In-Gyu, selected The Mission of God by Christopher Wright as the first book to read and discuss.
Many Christians believe missions began with the Great Commission given by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20. But the author contends that God’s mission started right after sin entered the world, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden.
God called Abraham and promised him that he and his descendants would become blessings to all nations, according to His master plan to restore the fallen world. Then God made a covenant with Israel through Moses, promising that they would be a holy nation and a light to Gentiles. He later promised King David that one of his descendants would be the king (Messiah) ruling over all the nations with justice and mercy, bringing the entire world to God.
The Israelites ignored their mission and followed the gods of their neighboring nations. So God rejected Israel and gave the mission to the Church, which was formed through Jesus’ death on the cross, resurrection and ascension, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The mission of the church was to form a holy community and reach all nations with the gospel, helping them to confess that Jesus is Lord and then becoming God’s people. Matthew 28:19-20, called the Great Commission, is the mission statement for the New Testament churches.

This book helped me understand the purpose of the church and her mission more clearly. It also made me see how much today’s churches are failing in their mission by falling prey to the materialism, successism, and authoritarianism values of the world, just as the Israelites had worshipped the idols of their neighboring nations and followed their practices.
I strongly encourage pastors and lay people alike to read this book to have a clear understanding of the church and her mission.

홍인규 교수님(전 백석신학대학원장)과 김순성 교수님(전 고려신학대학원장)을 모시고 가정교회 목회자 5명이 독서회를 시작했습니다. 모임 책임자인 홍 교수님이 첫번째로 선택한 책이, 크리스토퍼 라이트가 저술한 ‘하나님의 선교(The Mission of God)’입니다.
세계 선교는, 마태 28:19~20에 기록된 대사명에서 비롯되어 시작되었다고 많은 크리스천들이 생각합니다. 그러나 저자는 아담과 해와가 죄를 짓는 순간부터 하나님의 선교는 시작되었다고 말합니다. 죄로 파괴된 세상을 회복하는 것이 하나님의 선교라고 정의합니다. 개인, 사회, 자연까지 회복하는 것이 선교라는 것을 성경에 근거하여 주장하는데, 상당히 설득력이 있습니다.
깨어진 세상을 회복하기 위하여 하나님께서는 아브라함을 부르셨습니다. 그리고 후손들을 번창하게 하시이 이스라엘 민족을 이루시었습니다. 모세를 세워서 언약을 맺으시고, 이들이 제사장적인 민족이 되어 이방인들에게 빛이 되고, 궁극적으로 온 세상을 회복할 사명을 주셨습니다.
그러나 이스라엘은 사명을 망각하였습니다. 하나님의 선택을 특권으로만 생각했고, 거룩한 빛이 되기는커녕, 우상을 숭배했고, 이방인들의 타락된 풍습을 좇았습니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 예수님을 세상에 보내시어, 십자가의 죽음과, 부활과, 승천과, 성령 강림을 통해 교회를 시작하시고, 깨어진 세상을 회복하는 사명을 교회에 맡기셨습니다. 이 사명이 마태복음 28:19~20에 기록된 ‘대사명’입니다.
“나는 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 받았다. 그러므로 너희는 가서, 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아서, 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 주고, 내가 너희에게 명령한 모든 것을 그들에게 가르쳐 지키게 하여라. (마태 28:18~20)”
이 책을 읽은 후, 도수 맞는 안경을 쓴 것 같은 시원함을 맛보았습니다. 교회에 관하여, 선교에 관하여, 희미했던 것이 명료해졌습니다. 선교는 개인 구원에서 시작하지만, 궁극적으로는 사회, 자연의 회복까지 포함된다는 사실에 동의하게 되었습니다. 동시에 사명을 망각하고 물질주의, 성공 주의, 권위주의 등 세상적인 가치관에 젖어있는 오늘날 교회의 모습에서, 부름의 목적을 깨닫지 못하고 주변 국가의 우상을 좇았던 이스라엘의 모습을 보며, 안타까움이 더해졌습니다.
교회의 본질과 사명을 갖고 고민하는 목회자들과 성도들이 꼭 읽어야 할 책이라고 생각됩니다.
