Innocent as Doves, Shrewd as Snakes(참는 것이 능사가 아니다)- Kor/Eng
얼마 전 한국 드라마를 시청하였습니다. 주인공은 착한 가장입니다. 가출한 아내가 이혼소송을 제기했는데, 주인공은 이혼을 거부합니다. 그러나 아빠가 무능한 사람, 나쁜 사람이라고 엄마에게 세뇌된 세 딸은 아버지를 격렬하게 공격합니다. 아내가 이혼소송을 제기한 이유가 동거하는 남자 때문이라고 밝히기만 하면 억울함을 벗는데, 딸들이 엄마에 대한 존경심을 잃을까 봐 아버지는 이 사실을 말하지 않고, 공격을 참고 견딥니다. 여기까지 보다가 복장이 터져서 TV를 꺼버렸습니다.
이처럼 변명 않고 무조건 참는 것이 진정 착한 것인지?
오래 전 부흥사에게서 들은 어떤 시골 교회 목사님 얘기가 기억납니다. 어떤 처녀가 아기를 안고 나타나 목사님의 아기라고 하며 품에 안겨주고 사라졌습니다. 이 소문이 퍼지면서, 목사가 불륜을 저질렀다며 많은 교인들이 떠났고, 교회는 풍비박산이 되었습니다. 그러나 목사님은 자신의 무고함을 하나님께서 풀어주실 것을 믿으며 한 마디 변명도 하지 않고 묵묵히 아기를 키웠습니다. 몇 년 후 그 여성은 회개하고 찾아와, 아기 아버지가 목사님이 아니라고 밝혀서, 마침내 목사님은 누명을 벗게 되었습니다.
하나님만 의지하고 변명을 않았던 이 목사를 칭찬하는 의도로 이 일화를 소개했던 것 같은데, 이게 과연 하나님께 칭찬받을 일인지? 침묵의 결과로 상처 입은 많은 사람들은 어떻게 되고, 무너져버린 교회는 누가 책임질 것인지? 의문이 생깁니다.
저는, 목사가 억울하게 공격을 당할 때, 맞대응을 한다든지 법정 고소를 하는 것은 삼가야겠지만, 그렇다고 무조건 침묵 가운데 참는 것은 옳지 않다고 생각합니다. 최소한 한 번은 사실을 밝히고 해명을 해야 한다고 생각합니다.
대적하는 사람들을 설득하기 위해서가 아닙니다. 이 사람들은 어차피 생각을 안 바꿉니다. 목사를 믿는 사람들에게 신뢰의 근거를 제공해주기 위해서입니다. 침묵하며 예수님께서 억울함을 풀어주시기를 기다리는 것은 그후에 온다고 생각합니다.
이것이 성도들에 대한 사랑이고 교회에 대한 배려라고 믿습니다.

I started watching a K-drama that featured a good-hearted father with three daughters. His wife left him and demanded a divorce, but he refused. His daughters pressured him to agree to the divorce and give up all of his possessions to her as alimony. The girls had been brainwashed by their mother to believe that their father was the cause of the all the family’s problems. The father had evidence that his wife had been coaxed into filing for divorce by her boyfriend, with whom she was currently living. If he presented that information, the misunderstanding between him and his daughters would be resolved easily, in my opinion. But he continued to withhold that knowledge, fearing that it would make his daughters lose respect for their mom. So his suffering continued.
At this point I turned off the TV because it gave me stress, not enjoyment.
Some Korean pastors have an attitude like the father in the drama. When they are wrongly accused, they don’t defend themselves and keep their mouth shut. They are afraid that speaking up could hurt the church and its members. They believe that keeping quiet is trusting God to vindicate them.
But is this really what God wants? I believe that pastors should tell their side of story at least once if they are wrongly accused, not to persuade their nemesis but to give those who trust their pastors reasons to keep doing so. At that point, they can leave the case in God’s hands.
We should remember what Jesus said: Be innocent as doves but shrewd as snakes (Matt 10:16).
