천국 지옥 정말 있습니다 (Yes, There Are Heaven and Hell)-영어/한글
During Chuseok, the traditional Korean Thanksgiving Day, people visit their parents’ graves, serve food, bow before them and sometime talk to them as if they were alive. Talk show hosts occasionally ask guests to say something to their deceased parents in heaven. Koreans seem to believe that their parents are still alive in a nice place, where they will be reunited when they die.
However, they usually avoid confronting the answer to the challenging question - How do you know your parents are in heaven and that you will go there when you die?
Most people prepare for life after retirement but don’t even think about life after death. They presume that either there is no afterlife, or they will automatically go to heaven if there is one.
Jesus said that death is not the end of life, but a new beginning. There is indeed a heaven and a hell. Jesus alone has the legitimacy to make this claim because He is the only person in human history who died and came back to life. He, of all people, would know what happens after we die.
If people focused on Jesus and investigated the events surrounding His death, they would be able to see that Jesus really did die and rise again, proving that He is the savior of the world as He claimed. Unfortunately people are lazy or indifferent and continue to believe, without reason, that they will go to heaven when they die.
What will happen if their belief turns out to be wrong? What if a new world is exposed to them the moment they breathe their last? What if they find themselves at the gates of hell? Just thinking about it makes me shudder for them.
I feel like shaking them and shouting, “Wake up! You are in mortal danger! Believe in Jesus!” I know it won’t do any good, so I will pray for them today as I did yesterday that God will open their hearts to the Gospel.

추석이 되면 사람들은 부모님 무덤 앞에 음식을 진설하고, 절을 하고, 어떤 때에는 돌아가신 부모님과 대화도 나눕니다. TV 프로그램에서도 사회자가 돌아가신 부모님께 한 마디 하라고 하면 하늘을 향해 감사의 말을 하는 것도 종종 봅니다. 한국 사람들은 세상 떠난 분들의 영혼이 소멸된 것이 아니라 좋은 곳에 계시며, 자신들도 죽으면 그 곳에 갈 것이라고 믿는 것 같습니다.
그러나 무슨 근거로 그렇게 믿냐고 따져 물으면, 대부분은 답을 얼버무립니다. 한 번 죽으면 되돌아 올 수 없는 길이라, 얼버무리고 넘어갈 사안이 아닌 것 같은데 말입니다. 막연하게, 죽음과 더불어 삶이 끝나거나, 아니면 좋은 곳에 가리라 믿는 것 같습니다.
예수님께서는, 죽은 후에 영혼이 소멸되는 것이 아니며, 천국과 지옥이 있다고 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. 이러한 예수님의 말씀을 가볍게 받아드릴 수 없습니다. 죽은 후의 일은 죽어본 사람만이 확실히 알 수 있을텐데, 예수님은 죽었다가 살아나신 인류 역사상 유일한 분이시기 때문입니다.
죽으면 모든 것이 끝난다고 생각했는데, 숨이 끊어지는 순간 새로운 세계가 눈앞에 펼쳐진다면 얼마나 놀랄까요? 지옥은 없다고 생각했는데, 자신이 지옥의 문턱에 와있는 것을 발견하면 얼마나 절망할까요? 상상만 해도 몸서리가 쳐집니다.
죽으면 모든 것이 끝난다든지, 좋은 곳에 갈 것이라고 막연하게 믿으며 사는 사람들, 정신 차리라고 따귀를 때리고 머리끄덩이를 당겨서라도 예수를 믿게 하고 싶지만 그렇게 해서 될 일이 아니라, 하나님께서 이들의 마음을 열어주시기를 오늘도 어제처럼 안타까운 마음으로 기도할뿐입니다.
