부자로 사는 법 (How to Live Rich)-영어/한글
I came to the US in 1970 to pursue a doctorate degree in electrical engineering at Ohio State University. My wife, who was my fiancé at the time, was admitted to the school of pharmacology and joined me the next year. We got married as soon as she arrived in the US.
Because we were so poor, our wedding ceremony was simple. I wore my everyday suit with a bowtie, and she wore a dress she had made for herself in Korea. The wedding reception was simple, too. It was held in the church fellowship hall right after the ceremony, and guests were offered wedding cake and lemonade.
Despite the minimalistic celebration, we didn’t feel deprived. All the Korean international students were having weddings more or less like ours.
Compared to this, modern weddings in Korea seem extravagant. In addition to having an ornate wedding ceremony, the clothes they wear and the food they serve is usually very expensive. Koreans’ lifestyles, generally speaking, are more upscale than average Americans. But a large number of Koreans still seem to feel they are poor, constantly comparing themselves with the top tier of high-income earners. Americans are more focused on creating their own wealth and success than how others are doing it.
CS Lewis said this: Imagine a set of people all living in the same building. Half of them think it is a hotel, the other half think it is a prison. Those who think it a hotel might regard it as quite intolerable, and those who thought it was a prison might decide that it was really surprisingly comfortable.
If we want to live rich, we should not try to make more money but change our perspective.

저는 1970년에 미국에 유학을 왔습니다. 약혼자였던 아내는 1년 후 같은 대학 안에 있는 약학 대학원 입학허가를 받아 와서, 둘이는 결혼식을 올렸습니다. 우리는 둘 다 집으로부터 경제적인 도움을 얻을 형편이 아니라 평소에 입던 옷을 입고 결혼식을 올렸습니다. 전 까만 나비 넥타이 하나 사서 매었고, 아내는 한국에서 자기 손으로 만들어 가져온 웨딩드레스를 입었습니다. 교회당에서 결혼식을 마치고 친교실에서 케이크를 자르는 것이 피로연이었고, 삼촌이 돈을 내주어 결혼식 날 밤 모텔에서 잔 것이 신혼 여행이었습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 저희가 가난하다고 생각하지 않았습니다. 약간의 개인차는 있었지만, 당시 유학생들은 대부분 이런 식으로 조촐하게 결혼식을 치루었기 때문입니다.
그런데 요즈음 한국 결혼식을 보면 호화롭습니다. 결혼식뿐 아니라, 일반적으로 대한민국 국민들이 미국 사람들에 비해 씀씀이가 큰 것 같습니다. 미국에서는 10불(1만2천원), 20불을 쓸 때에도 벌벌 떠는데, 5만원 권을 아무렇지도 않게 쓰는 사람들이 많습니다. 그래서 미국에 살다가 한국을 방문하면 미국 거지처럼 느껴질 때도 있었습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 한국 사람들 가운데 자신이 잘 산다고 생각하는 사람들은 별로 없는 것 같습니다. 상대적 빈곤감 때문인 것 같습니다. 미국은 땅덩어리가 커서 그런지 남이 잘 사는지 못 사는지 크게 관심이 없습니다. 그러나 한국에서는 부자들이 어떻게 사는지 잘 알고 있고, 자신이 그 수준으로 못살면 가난하다고 느끼는 것 같습니다.
‘순전한 기독교(Mere Christianity)’ 저자인 CS Lewis가 이런 내용의 말을 했습니다. “같은 건물에 산다 할지라도, 건물이 호텔이라고 생각하는 사람은, 형편 없는 호텔에서 산다고 생각할 것이고, 건물이 교도소라고 생각하는 사람은, 꽤 괜찮은 교도소에 수감되어 있다고 생각할 것입니다.”
부자로 살고 싶으면 돈을 많이 벌려고 하기보다, 관점을 바꾸어야 한다고 생각합니다.
